Preston North End manager Paul Heckingbottom has expressed increasing confidence in on-loan midfielder Alfie Devine, highlighting the 21-year-old’s adaptation to the rigours of the Championship during the 2025/26 season.

In a recent interview with the Lancashire Post, Heckingbottom praised Devine’s physical and technical progress, noting how the Tottenham Hotspur loanee has become a mainstay in the Lilywhites’ squad, which currently occupies a play-off spot.

Key Highlights from Heckingbottom’s CommentsInitial Impressions and Loan Background:

Devine joined Preston on a season-long loan from Spurs in August 2025, complete with an option to buy.

Heckingbottom was drawn to the player after reviewing his previous loan at Belgian side Westerlo (where he scored six goals in 32 appearances), but emphasised the step-up to consistent Championship minutes.

“I like Alfie a lot, as a lad and as a footballer,” Heckingbottom said, adding that their initial chat convinced Devine to commit quickly.

Recent Form and Adaptation: Over the last three matches, Devine has played the full 90 minutes each time, showing growing stamina. Heckingbottom observed: “He’s looking stronger as the game’s gone on. He’s adapting and doing the things required to give yourself that chance to perform.”

This follows a short Championship stint at Plymouth Argyle in 2023/24, but marks Devine’s first sustained run in the division.

On-Field Impact: In 17 league appearances this season, Devine has contributed three goals and one assist, often partnering effectively with fellow loanee Lewis Dobbin (who has nine goal involvements).

Notable moments include a cheeky finish in a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers in November.

Heckingbottom described him as “quality” and eager to get on the ball from day one.

Broader Context: Devine, Tottenham’s youngest-ever first-team goalscorer (at 16 in an FA Cup tie against Marine in 2021), signed a new contract with Spurs before this loan, signalling their belief in his potential.

Early in the season, Heckingbottom was excited but cautious about his adjustment; now, midway through, the praise underscores Devine’s integration into a competitive Preston side pushing for promotion.

If his form continues, the buy option could lead to a permanent move, as speculated by fans and analysts.

This development is timely as Preston prepares for upcoming fixtures, with Devine emerging as a key creative force in midfield.
