“Not everyone is perfect” – Tottenham star opens up about early criticism

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur completed the loan signing of Pedro Porro from Sporting during last year’s winter transfer window.

The agreement included a loan fee of €5 million and an obligation to purchase for €40 million in the summer.

The high-profile transfer Porro didn’t have the best start to his Spurs career when he made his club debut in a match against Leicester City, which ended in a 4–1 defeat.

He drew negative attention from pundits, including former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood, who publicly criticised his performance, labelling it as ‘so bad it’s unbelievable.’

However, the resilient defender refused to be discouraged by the early setbacks, instead embracing the challenge and working diligently under the guidance of manager Ange Postecoglou to elevate his game.

Porro has since then established himself as a key figure in the squad.

Reflecting on the criticism he faced during the early stages of his Tottenham career, Porro emphasised the importance of self-confidence and resilience in overcoming challenges.

He said (quotes via The Spurs Express):

“Obviously nobody likes criticism. But in this world, you are exposed to good and bad things being said about you. At the end of the day, you don’t care as long as you are confident in yourself.

“I knew that I was going to get a lot of criticism and that it was going to be hard at first. Not everyone is perfect and goes and fits in the first time. Now I’ve been working really hard to turn that criticism into praise and now I’m feeling more affection.”

Porro’s influence extends beyond defensive duties, with his attacking contributions proving instrumental for Spurs this season.

Having registered eight assists in 25 Premier League appearances, he is considered one of the best offensive fullbacks in the league.
