Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence was on loan at Genoa this past season and the Italian club are hoping to sign him permanently.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Italian club are currently in talks with Tottenham to sign the player and negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs.
He wrote on X: “Genoa have approached Tottenham to sign Djed Spence on a permanent transfer. Negotiations ongoing between the two clubs and player side, it will depend on the price. Genoa’s numbers this season, the best among promoted teams in top 5 European leagues — with club set to extend the contract of the whole management, including director Marco Ottolini.”
It will be interesting to see if the two parties can secure an agreement in the coming weeks. The 23-year-old right-back does not have a future at Tottenham and a permanent move to Italy would be ideal for him.
He needs to play regularly at this stage of his career and Genoa will be able to provide him with the platform. Spurs already have Pedro Porro and Emerson Royal at their disposal. They will not be able to accommodate Spence and it makes sense to cash in on him and invest the proceeds into strengthening the squad.
Tottenham will be competing in the UEFA Europa League next season and they need a deeper squad in order to deal with the fixture congestion. The departure of Spence could help them bring a new signing this summer.
The 23-year-old was highly rated before he moved to Tottenham and he has been quite impressive for the Italian outfit on loan. He will look to establish himself as an indispensable asset for Genoa in the coming months as well. If he manages to fulfil his potential with the Italian outfit, there will be plenty of opportunities for him to join a bigger club in the near future.
