“Maddison is not the best signing” – Ex Arsenal man names the Spurs star who has been the ‘signing of the season’

By Mehdi Gokal -

Former Arsenal defender William Gallas has named the Tottenham player he believes is the best signing of the season.

Tottenham had an excellent transfer window as they signed 7 players in the summer including Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison, Manor Solomon, Micky van de Ven, Ashley Phillips, Brennan Johnson, and Alejo Veliz.

All of the signings have made an immediate impact but Maddison and van de Ven have been the standouts in particular.

Many believe Maddison has been to signing of the season in the league with the former Leicester City man scoring three goals and assisting five in 10 games so far.

His influence goes beyond his performances on the pitch with the leadership skills being a major positive for Spurs.

Despite Maddison’s impressive start to life at Tottenham, Gallas believes that the real standout signing of the season is Micky van de Ven, a former Wolfsburg defender.

Van de Ven has immediately bolstered Tottenham’s defense, adapting seamlessly to the physical and competitive nature of the Premier League. His partnership with Cristian Romero at the back has proven to be formidable.

Gallas emphasised that prior to his move to Tottenham, nobody knew him. His ability to adapt from the Bundesliga to the Premier League and make a significant impact on the team is what, in Gallas’s opinion, makes him the best signing of the season.

Speaking to The Mirror (via HITC), he said:

“James Maddison is not the best signing of the season – Van de Ven is.”

“We already knew how good Maddison was, and him going to Spurs was the natural progression. People aren’t surprised to see him doing so well, and Tottenham’s players have more quality than Leicester’s.”

“Nobody knew Van de Ven prior to his arrival and he’s playing in his first Premier League season.

He had to adapt to a new team and a new league. He doesn’t make mistakes and he plays a very simple, effective game. People are starting to speak about him now and he’s starting to score.”

TBH Says:

Micky van de Ven’s impact to the Tottenham defense is much like Virgil van Dijk’s when he signed for Liverpool from Southampton.

But Van Dijk had already been playing in the Premier League which is why he did not need time to adapt at Liverpool. But the fact that van de Ven had no prior PL experience makes his better.
