Lucas Bergvall has responded to Ange Postecoglou’s warning about the ‘levels’ he must reach to succeed at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 18-year-old arrived at Spurs from Djurgardens in his native Sweden over the summer.
Already, he’s caught the eye with some classy performances, while registering two assists in four Europa League appearances.
However, his most recent outing against Galatasaray was one to forget, with Bergvall completing just 61% of his passes and winning only one of five ground duels.
Bergvall — much like his Spurs teammates, in fairness — struggled to cope with Galatasaray’s intensity and was brought off in the 66th minute of what was eventually a 3-2 defeat that flattered the London side.
After the match in Istanbul, Postecoglou insisted the defeat to Galatasaray would serve as a lesson to Bergvall and Tottenham’s other youngsters.
“The same with Lucas, giving him an understanding of the levels here,” he said. “It is not easy when you are playing away in Europe. You can only allow them to learn that by exposing them to it.”
Lucas Bergvall responds to Ange Postecoglou comments
Away on international duty with Sweden, Bergvall has now responded to his manager’s comments, agreeing that he will learn from defeat to Galatasaray.
“Yes, it’s clear that there is a lot I can take from that match. It was a tough game for the whole team. We were not up to par,” he said (via Football.London).
“We have to do everything we can to improve for next time, because these are the kind of games you play in Europe. With an incredible setting, a lot of fans and a good opposing team.
“Especially us youngsters who haven’t played that many games in Europe can learn from it. It’s part of a career. It’s important to capitalise on it.”
