Lucas Bergvall lifts lid on the actual reason behind ‘unfair’ Spurs season

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has been anything but smooth, with injuries playing a significant role in their struggles across all competitions.

Sitting 14th in the Premier League and eliminated from both domestic cup competitions, Spurs’ only hope of salvaging the campaign lies in the Europa League.

However, the squad’s inconsistency has been largely due to fitness issues, with multiple key players sidelined throughout the season.

Midfielder Lucas Bergvall recently spoke to Swedish media about how injuries have disrupted Tottenham’s season, stating that the team has suffered unfairly due to the sheer number of absentees.

He pointed out that several of his teammates have been overworked, playing an excessive number of minutes, which has inevitably taken a toll on their performances.

Via Aftonbladet, the 19-year-old stated:

“I don’t think it’s been a fair season to be honest. Not considering how much damage we have had. I don’t know what the reason is but as we have talked about with Dejan, there are many who have played an incredible number of minutes. It’s not human, so of course it’s a big factor.”

Lucas Bergvall has been sensational for Tottenham

Bergvall, who joined Spurs in July 2024 following an £8.5 million move, has emerged as one of the bright spots in an otherwise disappointing campaign.

Despite being in his debut season, the Swedish teenager has shown great maturity and composure in midfield.

He made his first start for Tottenham in a 2-1 EFL Cup victory over Coventry City in September before making a statement with his first goal for the club—a crucial winner against Liverpool in the 1st leg of the EFL Cup semi-final in January.

So far, Bergvall has featured in 38 matches across all competitions, contributing one goal and four assists.

His performances have been a silver lining for Ange Postecoglou’s side, demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest level despite his age.

While Spurs’ league campaign has been underwhelming, the focus now shifts to the Europa League, where they still have a chance to end the season on a high. A deep run in the competition could provide some much-needed positivity and build momentum heading into the next campaign.
