Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has suggested that there is little correlation between money spent and winning.
The 58-year-old’s comments came at a Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust meeting last week, as he discussed various topics concerning the club.
As seen in the tweet below, one of the points he made was his belief that there is little correlation between money spent and winning.
His comments were expanded upon by the Evening Standard, with Spurs said to have had a net base spend of £200m over the last four years and the need for the right decisions to be made was stressed as a priority.
The report above goes on to note that Levy added that failure to qualify for the Champions League next season would likely have a negative impact on Tottenham’s spending this summer.
With Jose Mourinho insisting last week that the club are aware of the need for a more balanced squad next season, as per BBC Sport, Levy’s comments at the meeting could suggest that their plans may have to be adjusted depending on whether or not they’re at Europe’s top table in the 2020/21 campaign.

But it’s all Poch’s fault you know. Flogged the poor loves to death he did.
Toby’s looking well invigorated by his new salary too!! 😂
Buying the majority of players these days is full of risk, which for me is down to their characters and personalities more so than their skills and ability as footballers. The scouting process at this club has always been questionable, but there is undoubtedly interference from Levy too, which is impacting on the quality of players that are brought in. Something has to change with that way of recruitment , it’s not working , and it’s not just about how much money spent , it should be about choosing the right players to fit this club, instead of hoping they turn out okay.
Totally agree ,Liverpool done some excellent bizness in selling players and getting decent money to balance their net spend out.
So Man city, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barca, PSG all brought through youth players and cheap punts did they?
Looking forward to this summer’s N'(insert useless french footballers name here) joining us to spearhead the attacking midfield. N’Jie N’Cluedo, N’Dombele N’OStiker
Ironic then really that the very man that Levy would need in this situation has already been forced out the door and is working for Leipzig. Tonight we will watch young players scouted and bought relatively cheaply by Paul Mitchell. Levy has never spent and never will. Get the Champions League final and buy Fernandes, the best new midfielder in the league right now, or Grealish, arguably the second? No. He didnt back Poch and now Poch is talking to Real Madrid the most illustrious club in football. Honestly. Levy is a rat in a hole and has nowhere to hide. It is just whether the fans protest or not. Hit them in the wallet? it is not possible maybe with all these gigs and tourist fans….we lost when he demolished our stadium.
A very good point.
This is a man in both in denial and running out of excuses. The reason why we qualified for the Champions League regularly was because of the way Poch and his staff were able to work with and develop a young, and a relatively cheaply assembled squad.
Unless he can find some people to perform the same feat, his little theory about spending levels and achievement on the pitch will be shown to be the garbage it truly is.
He honestly thinks Jose can work the same way, he’s that blinkered. He thinks the 15m a year to Jose will negate the need to invest properly in the squad. That’s because he knows nothing about football…
If we fall out of the CL then we need to scale up the budget to bring in better quality to get ourselves back into the CL. We have been consistently in the CL for the past four seasons and the budget has never been scaled up so why should it be scaled down if we are not in it. More snake oil spin from Golam.
I want to know why losing CL football reduces budget, but getting it didnt increase budget?
The point is to boost the personal wealth of himself and uncle Joe.End of.
Hes not like completely wrong it is possible to make a good recipe with cheaper ingredients I.e sheffield problem is hes trying to make a cake with no flour or icing or anything it’s not about spending alot it’s about identifying what you need and spending wisely. Something he hasnt done he was unwilling to spend on any ingredients and the cupboard is bare
Failure to qualify for CL next season is exactly the time you need to up the expenditure on playing staff, not decrease it. The man is devoid of ambition and vision when it comes to the football side of things.
So what is the point of the superbowl and world record profits then? No wonder this man rarely speaks or does interviews.
Baldy has said this before. It begs belief.. Man united, sir alex, city, shieks, chelsea, abromovich, real madrid, barcalona have all proved spending and buying the best succeeds… Noone has been expecting levy to go and buy messi ronaldo neymar mbappe have they? The inability to sign a striker last window when united and spam manage to sums up the incompetence of levy.. Rather than talk about ambition, the team, players and winning stuff, this man talks about the importance of not spending money!
Actually Daniel has been proved correct. He is, is he not, one of the highest earning Chairmen in World Football? And, I would also contend m’lud Harry, he has overseen the winning of just one shiny pot in 20 years?
The problem for levy is spending doesnt gurantee success, Net spend over past 5yrs has City top £600m, United £441m, Arsenal £267m…Liverpool are 14th £106m and we are 15th on £98m (as of start of season). There are a hell of a lot of failing clubs spending more than us and Liverpool. The issue though is not WHAT you spend, its how you spend it. i have said for years, I have no issue with what Levy spends (1 season aside) but more on how he spends it. We average a pretty favourable outgoing each year (about £70m) but the problem is, Levy wants 3 players for that money, where Liverpool would get just 1. Buying quality is not about expense, its about focus, knowing WHEN to spend £70m on 1 player, and when not to.
Typical Levy drip feeding snippets of information to the deluded with very little exposure in the MSM.No CL next season is a real possiblity at the moment and he’s getting his excuses in early. The squad is being decimated by injury and all he can think of is protecting ENIC’s new record takings. This does not bode well.
Daniel Levy said there’s no correlation between alcohol and alcoholism ….
