Latest: Tottenham suffer major setback as they fail to receive clearance to sign former Manchester United star on a free

Tottenham Hotspur’s attempts to bring former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster out of retirement as a replacement for the injured Hugo Lloris have come to a halt.

According to Daily Mail, Foster was the leading candidate to fill the void left by Lloris, but the Premier League has denied Tottenham the clearance to sign him.

The Premier League allows teams to register players after the transfer window has closed in special circumstances. However, the report states that ‘under current rules’, the Premier League has rejected Tottenham’s request to sign Foster.

Foster, the former Manchester United keeper, was a serious consideration for Tottenham as they sought experienced cover for the injured Frenchman.

Despite his eight international caps and reputation as a reliable goalkeeper, Spurs are now aware that such a move would not be possible under the Premier League’s current rules.

Foster retired from football after being relegated with Watford last summer.

This news will come as a major setback for Spurs who were hoping to sign the veteran keeper.

Spurs have had a terrible week on and off the pitch. Not only were they trashed 4-1 by Leicester City, they have also lost Hugo Lloris, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon and Yves Bissouma to injuries.

The recent loss to Leicester City and the injury crisis have put the club’s hopes of finishing in the top four in jeopardy.

Antonio Conte will hope that the recent setbacks do not derail their season.

The club is still in contention for the FA Cup and the Champions League, and Conte will be eager to ensure that they are in the best possible position to compete for these titles.
