Journalist urges Levy to hand superstar a new contract to fend off interest from European giants

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has been making waves since his arrival in the Premier League.

Spurs signed the Dutch defender from Bundesliga club Wolfsburg last summer for a substantial transfer fee of €40 million.

Van de Ven has been exceeding expectations with his performances and has recently been recorded as the fastest player in the English top flight.

According to the latest Sky Sports data, the young defender clocked a speed of 37.38 km/h against Brentford, making him the quickest player in the division.

His world-class performance have started getting the deserved attention and former Liverpool striker turned pundit Stan Collymore suggests that Tottenham should offer van de Ven a new contract to fend off potential suitors.

Collymore believes that the 22-year-old is ‘top quality’, and big clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City could pursue his signature in a season or two.

In an exclusive interview with CaughtOffside, Collymore praised van de Ven and recommended that Spurs safeguard a player of such talent from other teams.

He said:

“All the talk around him at the moment is about his speed across the ground after he became the fastest-ever player to play in the Premier League after being clocked at 37.38km/h against Brentford last month — he’s crazy fast!

“But pace aside, Van de Ven looks like a top-quality signing. Fair play to Spurs’ recruitment department because even though he missed a chunk of the season out injured, he looks like he is going to be one of the signings of the season.

“I think Spurs’ only concern will be keeping hold of him long-term.

“I really wouldn’t be surprised if Real Madrid or Manchester City come in for him in a season or two — they’ve both probably already got their eye on him. Daniel Levy should already be preparing a new contract for him; one that includes a clause to prevent the club from losing a player that looks like becoming their most valuable asset.”

His instant impact to the Tottenham defence has earned him comparison to Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk who too made an immediate impact after joining FROM Southampton, helping the club win several trophies.

Van de Ven formed a fantastic partnership with Romero at the back helping Spurs to a 10 game unbeaten run but then suffered an injury against Chelsea which kept him out for a substantial period of time.

Despite the setback, he has recently returned to the team and continued where he left off.

Considering his potential and impact, Tottenham should consider offering Micky van de Ven an improved contract to secure his long-term future at the club.
