Tottenham secured a stunning 4-0 win against Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday.
James Maddison opened the scoring for the away side in the 13th minute and then scored again with a cheeky finish 7 minutes later.
Pedro Porro made it 3-0 with an unstoppable strike early in the 2nd half and Brennan Johnson put the cherry on the top late in stoppage time from a brilliant Timo Werner assist.
Jamie Redknapp praises Ben Davies for his performances
Despite missing several key players including primary centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, Spurs showed their depth and adaptability, with Ben Davies stepping up as a pivotal figure in their backline alongside Radu Dragusin.
Former Spurs star Jamie Redknapp singled out Davies’ performance, noting how the Welsh defender often flies under the radar but proved his immense value in this high-stakes encounter.
Known for his versatility across the backline, Davies seamlessly adapted to the centre-back role and provided much-needed leadership and composure in Tottenham’s defence.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Redknapp said:
“I think Ben Davies deserves a very special mention because I think him coming in and I’ve seen that he’s come on in a couple of games over Romero or when van de Ven has been injured and I thought he was very assured.
“He’s one of those sort of players that doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He can fill it up right-back, left-back. To go in at centre-back against one of the most ferocious centre-forwards in world football, he handled it perfectly.”
Facing one of the world’s most potent attacking sides, Davies anchored Spurs’ defence with assurance.
Over the 90 minutes, he delivered an impressive performance, achieving 83% passing accuracy by completing 54 out of 65 passes, including four key deliveries into the final third. His defensive efforts were equally remarkable, contributing six clearances and seven vital defensive actions. (FotMob)
What made Davies’ display truly standout was his ability to neutralise Manchester City’s formidable frontline, led by the prolific Erling Haaland.
The 31-year-old’s calm and composed presence not only thwarted City’s attacking threats but also boosted the performance of his defensive partner, young Radu Dragușin.
Together, they ensured Tottenham kept a clean sheet against a team renowned for its relentless offensive pressure.
For Spurs, this result was a testament to the squad’s depth and tactical flexibility under Ange Postecoglou’s leadership.
Davies, often a secondary option in the lineup this season, seized the opportunity to prove his worth with a stellar performance.
