Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son received harsh criticism from former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara following the team’s 1-1 draw against Leicester City in their Premier League opener.
Son, who assumed the captaincy last season, struggled to leave a significant mark on the match, despite Tottenham’s early dominance.
Spurs began the game on the front foot, with new signing Dominic Solanke nearly finding the net twice.
Pedro Porro eventually broke the deadlock, heading in a cross from James Maddison to give the visitors the lead before the half-hour mark.
However, despite maintaining control for much of the match, Ange Postecoglou’s men were unable to build on their advantage.
They were ultimately punished when Jamie Vardy levelled the score, leaving Tottenham to rue their missed chances as the game ended in a frustrating draw.
O’Hara did not hold back in his post-match critique, particularly targeting Son’s leadership and performance.
He questioned the decisions Son made on the pitch and his effectiveness in guiding the team during key moments.
His criticism was especially pointed regarding Son’s overall contribution. Even after playing 89 minutes, the South Korean managed just one shot, despite having 10 touches inside Leicester’s box.
O’Hara stressed that Son should have made a greater impact in such a crucial game.
Speaking to talkSPORT (19/08/24 at 10:15 pm), the pundit stated:
“Disappointing second half, Son wasn’t good enough and we should have put them to bed in the first half.”
O’Hara also slammed Cristian Romero’s performance, blaming him for the Vardy goal.
As Tottenham prepare for their next match against Everton, the pressure is on Son to rise to the occasion and provide the leadership and performance expected of a captain.
