Jamie Carragher reveals what Ange must change to win trophies at Tottenham

By Saikat -

Ange Postecoglou has had a great start to life at Tottenham Hotspur and the former Celtic boss has certainly impressed despite the inconsistency in his team’s performances.

The Australian boss has managed to transform Tottenham’s style of play. The North London club have gone from being a counter-attacking team to a front-footed possession-based side.

While it has been an impressive start for Postecoglou at Spurs, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher feels they need to create a rock-solid defence if they want to close down the gap with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.

Carragher said on The Overlap: “What people forget about Pep’s football is that his teams are always the best defensively or certainly one of the best. My worry is how many goals you concede.

“That has to change. People always talk about Pep’s football and we talk about him with the ball but off the ball is fantastic as well. That would have to be a big shift if Tottenham are going to win the biggest trophies.”

Tottenham need to improve defensively

Spurs parted ways with their record goal scorer Harry Kane ahead of the 2023/24 season and they decided against signing a replacement. Despite that, they haven’t really had any problems up top.

Their wide players have stepped up and the North London club have found the back of the net on 62 occasions in their 30 league games.

However, Postecoglou’s men haven’t been that great defensively. They have conceded 44 goals in the league this season, it is just three less than Chelsea who are currently 12th.

According to Carragher, they need to tighten up at the back if they want to challenge for major titles. The former Liverpool defender pointed out how Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have one of the best defences in the world and their success is based on that. Although their attacking play gets the limelight, their defence is just as good as their attack. And if Spurs want to compete for silverware, they need to build a strong defensive base.
