‘it’s a big red flag’: Alasdair Gold reacts to versatile Tottenham player’s Europa omission

Alasdair Gold has now opened up on Djed Spence’s omission from Tottenham’s Europa League squad.

The North London club haven’t had the best of starts to the new season. They have only won one out of their three league outings. But, things could change quickly as they have a few important fixtures lined up. Spurs will take on arch-rivals Arsenal after the international break and will then gear up for important cup fixtures.

They will square up against Qarabag in their opening Europa League fixtures towards the end of the month. But, they will be without Djed Spence who has been left out of the squad. During a Q&A session with the fans, Alasdair Gold talked about the full-backs omission and he was quick to question the Tottenham management.

Gold said on Football London: “Spence has done really well this summer and impressed everyone inside the club, including Postecoglou.

“I think he’s just been really unfortunate in that the squad choice would suggest the Spurs boss does not trust his backup goalkeeper options enough to leave out the experienced Fraser Forster. That means Spence was the odd man out.

“It’s a very risky decision because it leaves the defensive cover very light for the group stages. Romero is suspended for the first game against Qarabag and an injury or two more and there’s going to be some problems. Spence was able to cover both right and left-back spots.

“How the 24-year-old will react is going to be interesting. He’s come on in two of the first three Premier League games and will likely play in the Carabao Cup, so he should still get game time. It’s just a massive shame because he would have played a lot in Europe.

“Overall it’s a big red flag against the squad management Spurs have overlooked in recent years with not a single outfield club-trained player in the first team now. They have made moves to change that but it’s been a problem they should have sorted a long time ago.”

Spence had an impressive pre-season and, unfortunately, he had to miss out on the squad that was announced earlier this week. The North London club were forced to leave out two of their senior players because they did not have enough locally trained players. Fraser Forster was expected to be the second player alongside Sergio Reguilon to be left out of the squad.

But, Ange Postecoglou is not confident about his goalkeeping options and decided to have the experienced Forster in his squad instead of defensive sensation Spence. While he is still expected to play a significant part in other competitions, leaving him out of the Europa League is a big red flag. The fact that Spurs do not have a single outfield club-trained player in their first-team squad is a major concern for them. Despite all their efforts, they haven’t been able to address the issue.
