Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has revealed his ambitions with Tottenham this season.
After missing out on European football last season, Tottenham will compete in the Europa League this year. They secured a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League in what was Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge. While they will be pushing hard to end their trophy drought during the 2024/25 season, the priority will be to ensure they continue in Europe.
Guglielmo Vicario who took over as Tottenham’s number one recently talked about the club’s ambitions for the new season during an interview with Sky Italia. The 27-year-old goalkeeper suggested that the objective is to secure a top-eight finish but they want to ensure they have European football to look up to.
He said via Gianluca Di Marzio: “We like to play every three days, that’s what we wanted. Last season, we were without Europe and for a club like ours it was difficult in terms of ambitions,”
“Away games take away a lot of energy, you have to be good at recovering mentally and be ready to get back into the game right away.
“We are a big club, it’s normal that we play to win matches. Getting into the top eight in the Premier League is an objective, even if it’s difficult because there are so many strong teams to face, so it will be a sporting battle.”
Spurs have made a slow start to the new season with just two wins in five league outings. While things don’t look that bright, they are still expected to be fighting for a top-four finish until the end.
Vicario who has done a good job since replacing Hugo Lloris in goal suggested that it is quite tough for a club like Tottenham to be without any European football. They want to play every three days and compete for the biggest prizes in world football.
While they will be looking to win silverware this season, the Italian shot-stopper feels a top-eight finish is the primary goal of the club. Despite insisting on finishing inside the top eight, he wants to ensure that the North London club secure a place in any of the European competitions.
They did miss out on European football after finishing eight the season before as a result, Spurs will surely aim for a higher finish. Given the kind of investments they have made in recent years, Postecoglou’s team will be looking to make a return to the Champions League.
