Ben Jacobs believes Tottenham will not sanction Cristian Romero’s departure despite interest from Real Madrid.
Cristian Romero has only gone from strength to strength since making the move to Tottenham back in 2021. Not only has he established himself as one of the mainstays at the Premier League club, but the 26-year-old has also helped Argentina win major silverware in recent years.
The 26-year-old defender’s consistent performances have resulted in interest from across Europe. While he still has close to three years left on his deal at the North London club, Real Madrid have been linked with him and reports suggest Los Blancos could look to prise him away in the near future. But, according to Ben Jacobs Tottenham are not willing to sanction Romero’s departure.
While speaking on GIVEMESPORT, the transfer expert said: “Spurs have no plans to sell Cristian Romero despite links with Real Madrid. There is no pressure to sell, or start new contract talks, because Romero is contracted until 2027.
“Real are in the market for a centre-back because Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba are both in their thirties, and the latter is out with an ACL. But Real haven’t made any approach for Romero to date, and if that changes in 2025, I expect Spurs to stand firm.
“It is normal for new contract talks to start once a player has two years or less left, but right now Romero is not speaking to Tottenham or any other club, and it hasn’t even crossed Ange Postecoglou’s mind that the Argentine could leave any time soon.”
Jacobs has suggested that Spurs have no intentions of parting ways with Romero. The Argentine centre-back is a key part of their plans moving ahead and with close to three years left on his deal, Tottenham are under no pressure to negotiate his departure.
While Real Madrid do need a new centre-back and they could knock on the North London club’s door in 2025, the journalist feels Spurs will stand firm on their stance. They are expected to hold renewal talks with Romero in the near future. But, as things stand the 26-year-old is not in talks with anyone and Ange Postecoglou is not at all worried about his defensive ace’s future at the club.
