How Manchester United’s European exit affects Tottenham’s European pursuit

By Mehdi Gokal -

Manchester United’s exit from Europe could be bad news for Tottenham who currently sit 5th in the Premier League table.

Erik ten Hag’s side were knocked out of the Champions League following Bayern Munich’s 1-0 win over them last night. They finished last in a group that included Copenhagen FC and Galatasaray. The last placed finish means that they failed to qualify for the Europa League as well.

The report from Evening Standard notes that as part of a revamped 36-team competition next season, the two countries whose clubs perform best in European competitions this season will receive an extra Champions League spot.

This means, the club who finishes 5th in the table has a chance to qualify for next year’s European competition.

The report underscores that the club finishing 5th could grasp a chance to qualify for next year’s European competition, considering the performance of clubs from various countries.

While United’s exit and Newcastle’s potential exit could serve as a blow to Tottenham’s UCL aspirations for next season, they can still very well finish in the top 4 this season.

They started off the campaign in terrific manner going unbeaten in 10 games, winning 8 and drawing 2. Their season only started derailing due to their injury crisis that saw several key players sidelined from long-term injuries.

However, the performance against Newcastle showed that they are still one of the best sides in the league and there is no reason they can’t finish top 4.
