‘He kind of gave up’ – Sky Sports pundit tears into £165k-a-week Tottenham star

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur crashed to a 6-1 defeat against Newcastle United in their last Premier League game.

The North London giants have been in poor form over the last few weeks and the departure of Antonio Conte did not help. He was replaced by Cristian Stellini at the helm, who has now been sacked after the humiliating defeat against Newcastle.

Tottenham’s hopes of Champions League qualification are hanging by a thread and it remains to be seen whether the Londoners can get the season back on track.

While there were a number of disappointing performances from the Tottenham side against Newcastle, popular pundit Stephen Kelly has now shared his assessment of Cristian Romero.

The Argentine international defender is undoubtedly the best defender at the club and is usually quite an assured presence at the back with his defending and decision-making.

However, Romero was uncharacteristically poor against Newcastle and Kelly feels that the £165k-a-week Tottenham defender seemed to have given up. Romero could have certainly made a difference at the back for Tottenham with his teammates struggling.

“You see Romero, and I am such a fan of Romero,” said Kelly (h/t HITC). “I think he lives on the edge. He goes in for a tackle sometimes and I am turning my eyes away.

“But against Newcastle, he was disillusioned over the whole thing. He kind of gave up. Making crazy runs out of defence and doing things that lost the shape of the back four.”

The Argentine international was expected to organise the defence and keep things tight at the back.

It is evident that it was a bad day in the office for the Tottenham players and they will be desperate to bounce back strongly. Romero will be aware of his mediocre performance against Newcastle and it remains to be seen whether the World Cup winner can make amends over the next few weeks.
