Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has offered an intriguing perspective on current Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, highlighting what he believes is a key difference in the Australian’s approach to management.
Spurs’ commanding 4-1 victory over West Ham showcased a return to form after the international break, with an impressive second-half display where the team netted three goals in just eight minutes.
This win took Spurs to seventh in the Premier League, narrowing the gap to the top four to just four points.
Harry Redknapp on Ange Postecoglou as a coach
Former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp recently shared his thoughts on current Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, shedding light on how the Australian runs things behind the scenes.
According to Redknapp, Postecoglou takes a broader managerial approach rather than getting involved in the on-field coaching at Hotspur Way. He reportedly delegates much of the daily training to his coaching staff, particularly senior assistant Matt Wells, along with assistants Mile Jedinak and Ryan Mason.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the pundit said:
“I like him. He is not a coach. He doesn’t do any coaching, they tell me. He isn’t out there, he doesn’t actually do any coaching. I don’t know if that’s right, that’s what I have heard.”
Despite Redknapp’s claim that Postecoglou is less involved in day-to-day training, his tactical influence is undeniable.
Tottenham’s exciting attacking football under his leadership has been one of the standout features of this season. Statistically, Spurs rank fourth in non-penalty expected goals per 90 minutes across Europe’s top five leagues, sitting just behind footballing giants PSG, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich, according to FBref.
Since his appointment in June 2023, Postecoglou has made a significant impact. He became the first manager to win Premier League Manager of the Month awards in each of his first three months in charge, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s top tacticians.
After narrowly missing out on a Champions League spot last season by just two points, Postecoglou will be determined to better Tottenham’s fifth-place finish this season.
Ange Postecoglou’s future at Tottenham
Despite doing a very impressive job in a short time, his future at the club remains uncertain. Reports have surfaced about a potential investment from Amanda Staveley, the former Newcastle director. Speculation suggests Staveley could look to replace Postecoglou with Eddie Howe if the investment goes through.
While a managerial change seems unlikely in the immediate future, Postecoglou wouldn’t be short of opportunities should it happen. He has even been tipped as a potential success at Manchester United, should the Red Devils part ways with Erik ten Hag.
