Tottenham Hotspur right-back, Pedro Porro, is actively working to improve his game, particularly in terms of his defensive abilities, under the guidance of coach Matty Wells.
This revelation comes from renowned Tottenham expert Alasdair Gold, who has shared insights into Porro’s continuous development as a player.
Wells has been concentrating his efforts on enhancing Porro’s defensive skills, a critical aspect of the traditional fullback role favored by Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.
The former Sporting star has spent most of his career as an attacking fullback, making this transition essential for his success in the new system.
Gold has spoken highly of Porro’s progression this season, noting not only his increased focus on the defensive side but also his impressive attributes, such as speed, skill, delivery, and an exceptional passing range.
Gold even goes as far as to suggest that Porro is among the best passers in the Tottenham squad.
Speaking about the £39m man’s progression, Gold said:
“He’s worked on his defensive aspects of his game so much over the last two months or so.
“And when you add that to his speed, skill, his delivery, he’s got a brilliant passing range.
“I’d actually say he’s one of the best passers at Spurs.
“And I think what’s really impressive is [Ange] Postecoglou revealed afterwards is Matty Wells the coach who obviously came into help Ryan Mason and has stuck around with Postecoglou because he’s got a very similar kind of mindset to Postecoglou.
“Matty Wells has been working with his defence and [Pedro] Porro in particular.”
The hard work and dedication Porro has put into improving his defensive game seem to be yielding positive results.
He had another solid performance against Liverpool, where Tottenham secured a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Porro played a crucial role in the game, with his excellent cross forcing Liverpool’s Joel Matip to inadvertently score an own goal in the 96th minute to win it for the North London club.
