Former Spurs player wants to ‘come back’ to the PL, would complete Conte’s team – Opinion

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Marcus Edwards put on an impressive showing against his former club in the UEFA Champions League last night.

Sporting secured a 2-0 win over the Premier League side and Edwards was one of their key players.

The highly rated attacking midfielder joined Tottenham at the age of eight and signed his first professional contract with them at the age of 17. However, he had to leave the club in 2019 due to a lack of opportunities and his decision to move to Portugal has certainly paid off.

The talented young midfielder has developed impressively with regular first-team football at Sporting and he has revealed that he would like to return to the Premier League one day.

After the game, he said to Football London: “I wouldn’t say extra special [to beat Tottenham], it was a strange feeling playing against Spurs, I was there for so long.

“Of course, it’s my home, of course I want to come back there one day [to the Premier League].”

Tottenham could definitely use a player like him in the side right now and Edwards could prove to be a quality long-term acquisition.

The Sporting midfielder can play as a right-sided winger as well as a central attacking midfielder and Tottenham should look to make their move during the January transfer window or the end of the season.

Despite having a number of quality attackers at their disposal, Tottenham are lacking in creativity when it comes to their midfield. Edwards could slot into the number ten role and add some much-needed creativity in the middle of the park.

Furthermore, the chance to return to Tottenham and prove his worth at the London club could be a tempting proposition for the youngster and Antonio Conte should definitely try his luck when the transfer window reopens.

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Moura is nearing the end of his contract at the club and Edwards could be the ideal long-term replacement.

It will be interesting to see whether the Londoners try and bring him back to the club in the coming months.
