European giants want to make Spurs deal happen, but player won’t shift on wages

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet.

The 28-year-old was on loan at Tottenham last season and there were rumours that Spurs could look to sign him permanently in the summer.

However, the defender returned to his parent club upon the expiry of his loan deal.

A report from Spanish publication SPORT claims that Tottenham remain keen on signing the player permanently but the defender is not making it easy for a transfer to go through.

The 28-year-old has a lucrative contract with Barcelona and the Spanish club will have to pay him €16 million to leave.

The defender is contracted at Barcelona until the summer of 2026. Barcelona are keen for the player to join Tottenham as well but the move is stalling because of the wage issue.

Tottenham are unlikely to match his massive wages and therefore he will have to secure a payoff with the Spanish club before he can join Tottenham on a modest contract.

It will be interesting to see if all parties can come to a compromise in the next few days.

Lenglet does not have a future at Barcelona and a permanent move to Spurs would be ideal for him.

He did reasonably well at the London club last year and Spurs could definitely use more depth at the back.

The 28-year-old can operate as the left-side of the central defence as well as a left-back. His versatility will be an added bonus for Tottenham if they can get the deal across the line.
