‘don’t know if it’s the perfect role for me’: Spurs player unsure of his role under Postecoglou

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur defender Destiny Udogie has revealed that he is operating in an unfamiliar role under manager Ange Postecoglou.

The 21-year-old defender joined Spurs back in August 2022 for a fee of around €18 million but he was left on loan at Italian club Udinese. The defender joined up with his new teammates at the start of the season and he has established himself as an indispensable asset for Tottenham. His performances have been outstanding for the North London club, but his recent revelations will certainly come as a surprise.

He has excelled in his role at Tottenham. He has been given the freedom to venture forward and join the attack quite often. As a result of that, the Italian has chipped in with two goals and three assists across all competitions.

Udogie has revealed in an interview that he is unsure whether the role at Tottenham is perfect for him, and he is not used to playing that way. However, he is settling in and the art of defending he learnt in Italy is certainly helping him now.

“But the way of defending that I learned in Italy is definitely helping me,” he said to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I don’t know if it’s the perfect role for me, I’m not used to it. But I’m often there and I’m starting to settle in.”

The 21-year-old has been a reliable defender, but his qualities going forward have been just as good. He has the makings of an outstanding modern fullback and Tottenham will hope that he can continue his development and perform at a high level consistently.

Perhaps the defender was expecting a more conservative role at his new club. But there is no doubt that he is thriving in his current role.
