Tottenham star believes he should be playing in James Maddison’s position in the future

Since his arrival at Tottenham from Juventus in January 2022, Dejan Kulusevski has quickly established himself as a vital part of the team’s attacking force.

Initially secured on an 18-month loan deal for €10 million, with an option to buy, Kulusevski’s move became permanent in June last year, as Spurs secured his services on a contract until June 2028.

Throughout the ongoing campaign, the 23-year-old has proven to be a dependable asset for manager Ange Postecoglou.

Notably, during an injury crisis that sidelined key midfielders James Maddison and Giovani Lo Celso, Kulusevski showcased his versatility by seamlessly slotting into the attacking midfielder role, impressing with his performances as a No. 10.

Kulusevski believes he is not playing in his best position at Tottenham

In a recent interview with Lean Osman on Tottenham’s official YouTube channel, Kulusevski expressed his preference for a more central role, envisioning a transition to an attacking midfielder position in the future.

Despite currently being deployed on the wings, he believes his true potential lies in playing as a number 10.

He said:

“That was my position back then, mezzala (a half winger or wide central midfielder). Nah (when asked if this position at Spurs is now his role). I think that in the future – when I’m going to be at my best – I think it’s going to be in a central role, but for now, you know, you can adapt.”

The Swede has contributed with 6 goals and 3 assists in 26 Premier League appearances this season.

Despite fewer direct goal contributions, he significantly impacts the game through his involvement in the final third, a quality that Ange Postecoglou values highly.
