Tottenham Hotspur is actively evaluating potential signings ahead of the summer transfer window, with Lille’s Angel Gomes emerging as a strong candidate.
Transfer expert Dean Jones has suggested that Spurs are in a pole position to land the attacking midfielder, despite competition from clubs in Spain and Germany.
With his contract at Lille set to expire at the end of the season, Gomes is expected to be available on a free transfer, making him an appealing option for multiple European sides.
Speaking on the Ranks FC podcast, Jones said:
“I do believe that Tottenham are the most likely club to get this done if he [Gomes] comes to England. Now, it’s worth bearing in mind, he does have offers outside of England too.
“I haven’t been given any firm names on who they are, but I’m told he has very good profile clubs interested in him from Spain and Germany.”
Angel Gomes would be a great signing for Tottenham
The 24-year-old began his career at Manchester United’s academy, where he quickly gained attention as a standout talent. At just 16, he became the youngest player to represent United since Duncan Edwards in 1953, making his senior debut in 2017.
However, limited first-team opportunities at Old Trafford led him to seek more playing time, ultimately resulting in his departure in 2020.
He then made the switch to Lille, spending his first season on loan at Portuguese club Boavista.
Upon returning to the Ligue 1 side, he gradually became a key figure in the squad, particularly under manager Paulo Fonseca, who utilized him effectively as a central midfielder.
Gomes’ ability to retain possession under pressure, his vision, and his passing accuracy made him an integral part of Lille’s setup.
Last season, he ranked among Ligue 1’s top assist providers, further cementing his reputation as a creative force.
Due to his performances, Gomes received a call-up to the highly competitive England national team and made his senior debut in September last year in a 2–0 win against the Republic of Ireland.
Familiar with English football, Gomes would likely transition smoothly back into the Premier League, making him a strong addition to Tottenham’s squad.
As Spurs look to enhance their midfield creativity, Gomes’ skill set and versatility could prove invaluable. If all goes as planned, Tottenham could secure one of the most promising free transfers of the summer.
