According to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, Matt Doherty’s upcoming loan transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid is “one of the shocks of the day.”
Spurs manager Antonio Conte’s squad could look different by the time the transfer window closes at 11 p.m. tonight.
Doherty is set to join Atletico Madrid on loan for the rest of the season, according to Daily Mail, after seeing his opportunities at Tottenham limited.
According to the report, the right-back has travelled to Madrid to finalise the deal, and there is no option or obligation to make the move permanent.
Doherty was scheduled to have a medical ahead of his loan move away from North London, which was completed earlier today.
The Irishman is in the final 18 months of his contract at Tottenham, and the arrival of Pedro Porro would push him further down the pecking order.
Bridge understands that the player is close to completing his loan move to the La Liga giants with the clock ticking on the transfer deadline.
And the Sky Sports man believes that Doherty’s move to Atletico Madrid is the shock transfer of the day.
He told GiveMeSport:
“Matt Doherty is on his way to Spain and La Liga under Diego Simeone. Quite a move this is, to Atletico Madrid.
“Doherty will be joining up again with fellow Tottenham teammate Sergio Reguilon in that Atletico Madrid side in, perhaps, one of the shocks of the day.”
Tottenham are understandably loaning out Doherty, who has made only seven Premier League appearances this season. Porro is said to be taking his number at the club.
Meanwhile, Spurs have also loaned out Djed Spence to French side Rennes FC.
