Alan Hutton believes Daniel Levy will demand a substantial fee for the services of Tottenham mainstay Cristian Romero.
The Argentine international’s future has become the talk of the town in recent weeks. There is interest in his services from across Europe and Real Madrid are one of the clubs linked with Romero.
Spurs are unlikely to sanction his departure given his importance to their team. But, with Real Madrid interested in his services, Alan Hutton believes the player will at least listen to what they have to say. In case of a potential departure, the former Tottenham defender expects Daniel Levy to demand a fortune for the 26-year-old mainstay.
While speaking to Tottenham News, the 39-year-old said: “It would depend on where he’s going, if we’re talking about Real Madrid and these sort of teams then I’m sure he might want to see what they’re saying.
“I think for Daniel Levy to sell someone like that, who’s a main player for the team it would have to be huge sums of money first and foremost to allow to him go.
“Like I said they would need options to come in, I don’t think they could allow him to go and not have a top level centre-back coming in to start the season.
“So yes a lot of ifs and buts there but I wouldn’t want to see him leave, I think him and Van de Ven are a very sound partnership and Van de Ven I think makes him better as well.”
The North London club forked out £42 million to sign the Argentine defender from Atalanta back in 2021. He has only gone from strength to strength since making the move and has established himself as a mainstay in the team.
His consistent performances for club and country have resulted in a lot of interest. But, with three years left on his deal at Spurs, a move this summer seems quite unlikely.
Even if Real Madrid agree to pay a premium, Spurs will first look to ensure they have a replacement lined up before sanctioning his departure.
While there is a lot of interest in the 26-year-old, Hutton doubts that he will be on the move this summer given his importance to the team and the strong partnership that he has formed with Micky van de Ven in the heart of the defence.
Tottenham need to hold on to their best players if they want to push for trophies next season and keeping Romero at the club will be a priority for them.
