“I’ve been working on it”: Tottenham star admits he is working on a key part of his game after incredible stat is revealed

Tottenham vice-captain, Cristian Romero, has undergone a transformation in his disciplinary record on the field this season, marking a commendable turnaround for the Argentine defender.

In a notable display of discipline, Romero has not received a single booking in 2024, showcasing his improved composure and focus during matches.

Despite starting in six games and leading the side as captain on four occasions, Romero has maintained his cool under pressure, a stark contrast to his disciplinary struggles in previous seasons.

Since the start of the season until December, Romero picked up four yellow cards and one red card.

His red card against Chelsea in November resulted in his absence from three crucial Premier League fixtures, contributing to Tottenham’s setbacks.

Reflecting on his disciplinary improvement after a recent game, Romero attributed his progress to dedicated effort and awareness of his past tendencies. He acknowledged working on his approach to tackling and mitigating situations that could lead to unnecessary bookings.

Romero said (via Last Word On Spurs):

“It’s something I’ve worked on. I’ve realised I’ve been picking up too many cards at some points here and there.”

”When you’re a defender, you have to tackle, my style has lent itself to picking up cards in the past.”

“Through working on it you can try to eradicate certain things, maybe daft yellow cards for protesting too much, or clashing with someone.”

”With the style of defender I am, those clashes can be unavoidable sometimes if you have a face-off with someone.”

“I respect every opponent and team I play against and whatever clash happens it stays on the field.”

”I’ve been working on it and hopefully eradicating some of those cards.”

Romero’s commitment to refining his game and minimising avoidable yellow cards demonstrates his growth and maturity as a player, providing a positive outlook for Tottenham as they strive for success in the Premier League.

Since being named the vice-captain of the club, he has stepped up his game as well as his leadership and making a concentrated effort to work on his discipline is part of that maturity that has come with the responsibility.
