Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-Min has not been at his best this season.
The 30-year-old South Korean international has scored just four goals in the Premier League and manager Antonio Conte has now opened up about his faltering season.
The Italian manager admitted that the poor form of the South Korean international has been a concern for Tottenham.
“The players are human and he’s [Son Heung-min] is a person. For sure, if we talk about Sonny, last season, he scored 25 goals.”
“This season, he’s not scoring so much. For us, it’s not good news, this, because we count on his goals.”
“But then, we are not talking about robots; about a person, a human. I’m the first to hope that Sonny starts to score with the pressure or without the pressure of Richarlison behind. This is football.”
“We have to try to face, the players and the coaches, different situations, positive or negative. The most important thing I see during the training session and in the game that Sonny tries to do his best.”
“Sometimes, the best, it means that you go to score or make an assist, sometimes it means you’re not so lucky to score or make an assist”, he told Football.London’s Alasdair Gold.
It has been a difficult season for Tottenham in the Premier League with Harry Kane the only reliable goalscorer at the club.
Son has been a key player since joining the London club from Germany and he managed to score 25 goals across all competitions last season.
However, his regression has weakened Tottenham significantly and it remains to be seen whether they can secure a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League. Missing out on the top four would be a devastating blow for Spurs especially when it could impact the futures of Conte and Kane.
Conte is out of contract in the summer and he might not want to renew if he feels that the club will not be able to challenge for major honours of attract top players. Similarly, Kane will want to win trophies now and he might move on if Spurs fail to match up to his ambitions.
The South Korean did manage to impress with his country in the recently concluded World Cup and it will be interesting to see if he can regain his confidence and sharpness in the coming weeks.
