Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham secretly tried to sign Italian youngster Giorgio Scalvini.
Speaking on KICK (via TBR), he claimed that the club enquired about the defender but were put off by Atalanta’s huge asking price.
He said:
“We have the best Italian player U21 wining the award right now. This is Giorgio Scalvini. The centre-back of Atalanta, a very talented player, we know him very well in Italy, not as known in Europe, but he is very good.
“He’s on the radar of many clubs, for example, I heard, last summer, Tottenham were considering a move, he was one of the secret players that they had in the list at Tottenham, but they decided to go for something different because Atalanta were asking crazy money for Scalvini.”
The 19-year-old is considered one of the best young defenders in Serie A having established himself as a regular for the Italian side’s first-team.
Tottenham desperately needs defensive reinforcements. They signed Micky van de Ven in the summer who came and quickly became one of their best players.
They were to sign another top-quality defender in the summer as well but failed to get rid of the deadwood in time, but after moving the extras on, they are now left short at the back.
With the Dutch defender expected to be out until at least January, and Dier linked with an exit, Spurs will be in the market for another defender in the upcoming transfer window.
