Concern for Tottenham as first-team starter suffers injury during international duty

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham have received a major setback as centre-back Cristian Romero has suffered a minor calf injury while on international duty with Argentina.

Journalist Luis Fregossi shared the update on X, stating that he is a doubt to travel Bolivia.

He added that he will be further assessed tomorrow before they decide whether to send him back to England or if he is fit to travel to Bolivia.

This will come as a concern to Spurs. Cristian Romero has been of Tottenham’s best players so far. He has put in rock solid performances every single game alongside new centre-back partner Micky van de Ven.

He was given the role of co-vice-captaincy by new manager Ange Postecoglou who took over the club in the summer.

After Harry Kane’s departure, the manager decided to make Heung-min Son the captain with James Maddison and Cristian Romero the vice-captains.

And the Argentine has looked a more reliable presence at the back ever since he has assumed the new role of a leader.

Tottenham have left themselves short in the centre-back area with Eric Dier and young defender Ashley Phillips the only two available options. Dier has not been able to impress Ange, failing to make a single appearance for the club this season.

Davinson Sanchez was the first choice back-up for Ange but he completed a late move to Galatasaray.

In case Romero is sidelined with an injury, it will be interesting to see who Ange gives the nod as a replacement.
