Club chief optimistic Tottenham ‘will reach an agreement’ to sign 28-yr-old this summer

By Saikat -

Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet was on loan at Tottenham Hotspur last season.

The 28-year-old did reasonably well during his time at the north London club and there were rumours that Tottenham could look to sign in permanently.

However, the player returned to Barcelona upon the expiry of his loan deal. Barcelona president Joan Laporta believes (h/t Fabrizio Romano) that the Spanish giants will eventually reach an agreement with Tottenham for the permanent transfer of the French defender.

Lenglet clearly does not have a future at Barcelona and they will look to get rid of him permanently this summer.

On the other hand, Tottenham are in need of defensive reinforcements. Players like Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have been linked with moves away from the club. Japhet Tanganga could look to move on as well in search of regular playing time.

Cristian Romero remains the only reliable defender at the club and Lenglet could be a useful option at the back for Ange Postecoglou next season.

Spurs will probably hope to sign him for a knockdown price given his situation at the Spanish club and the financial difficulties of Barcelona. Barcelona need to sell their fringe players in order to strengthen their squad this summer.

It remains to be seen whether the two clubs can agree on a reasonable fee for the 28-year-old defender.

Lenglet is well-settled in English football and he could be excited about the idea of continuing in the Premier League next season.
