Tottenham Hotspur signed Richarlison in a big-money move from Everton at the start of the season.
The 25-year-old striker was expected to hit the ground running having impressed at Goodison Park and at Watford prior to that. The Brazilian was already well settled in English football but things have not gone according to plan for him at the London club.
Richarlison has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Antonio Conte, and he has had his fair share of injury problems at Tottenham.
Former Liverpool player and pundit Jason McAteer has now revealed that the Italian manager probably does not trust Richarlison enough and that is why the 25-year-old has not been handed a regular starting berth.
“You know his return reflects him as a player. I think he’s one of those players that’s got to play every week, to get into a rhythm and he finds it and he starts scoring on confidence.
“But he’s been in and out of the team. Son and Kane, Kulusevski and Bentancur all seem to be…I don’t know whether the man just doesn’t trust him. As in to play week in week out,” McAteer said to BeIN Sports.
The Brazilian international has started just 6 league games for Tottenham since joining the club and has failed to score in the league so far.
It remains to be seen whether Conte is prepared to give him an extended run in the side over the coming months and help him recapture his form and confidence.
Richarlison was impressive for Brazil in the recently concluded World Cup and he has proven his quality in the Premier League in the past as well. He is clearly a highly talented player who can be an asset for Tottenham in the long run.
Tottenham will probably have to be patient with him and the manager needs to show more faith in the player over the coming months.
