BBC man believes Spurs should go for “first-class” Premier League manager

By Mehdi Gokal -

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Garth Crooks has suggested that Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui could be a great candidate for the Spurs’ managerial role.

Tottenham are currently looking for a new manager after sacking Antonio Conte back in March. Various managers have been linked with the club since then, including Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, Roberto De Zerbi, Ruben Amorim, Vincent Kompany, and Ange Postecoglou.

Crooks spoke highly of Lopetegui’s achievements since he joined Wolves in November 2022, taking them from the bottom of the league to safety with a ten-point gap from relegation.

Lopetegui has also previously managed Real Madrid, Sevilla, and Porto, as well as the Spain national team. His biggest achievement came as a manager of Sevilla, where he guided them to winning the Europa League as well as consecutive top-four finishes.

Crooks described Lopetegui as a first-class manager who has only been let down by his players once this season. He also stated that Spurs and Chelsea are just two of the clubs that would benefit from Lopetegui’s services. The Wolves manager prefers an attacking 4-3-3 formation with a fast-paced style of football involving short passing and combo play.

He wrote in his column for BBC Sport:

“Julen Lopetegui has done a brilliant job since his arrival at Molineux. His players have only really let him down once and that was at Brighton.

“The problem for Wolves is, can they keep him?

“Lopetegui is a first-class manager and I can think of a number of clubs who would benefit from his services. Spurs and Chelsea are just two.”

While Nagelsmann is still considered a front-runner for the Spurs job, recent reports have suggested that he has concerns over the uncertainty regarding the sporting director role, which is yet to be appointed, as well as the power he will have on transfers.

With Daniel Levy under mounting pressure to make the right appointment, the search has been ongoing for a significant period of time, leaving supporters frustrated and impatient.
