“Bang out as many games as you can” Mourinho’s advice to Spurs youngster

By Joe Fish -

Kyle Walker-Peters has revealed that Jose Mourinho left the door open for him to return to Tottenham upon leaving on loan to Southampton.

The full-back was sent away to get regular Premier League football but only played once before the Covid-19 pandemic brought the season to a halt.

That means that Walker-Peters only has 25 first-team appearances to his name, despite now being 23 years old after having a lockdown birthday.

It was widely thought that only a particularly eye-catching spell on the South Coast could save Walker-Peters from being moved on permanently by Spurs, but Mourinho’s departing message to the player suggests otherwise.

Walker-Peters told The Times: “He said listen, Kyle, Tottenham is your home so you’re welcome to come back whenever you want. He said he just wants me to play, play, play. ‘Bang out as many games as you can.’

“If I do that, hopefully he’ll see me as a more experienced player and that’s all I want — a run of five, ten games where I can show what I can do.

“I feel, in my career, I’ve shown it in glimpses, but it’s always been one or two games, then I don’t play again.”

I think that the only way KWP is at Spurs next season is if we can’t move him on. I don’t think there is anything he can do at Southampton between now and the end of the season, whenever that is, that will dissuade the club from going into the market for a right-back, and the kid has had enough of being a mere number in the squad to provide cover.
