Tottenham defender Djed Spence has established himself as a key player for the club after months of struggling to hold down a regular starting spot.

The 24-year-old full-back was initially expected to be sold after his struggles, but he has now won over the manager’s trust and he has earned a new long-term contract at the club as well.

His performances have been rather impressive in recent weeks and Arsenal legend David Seaman has now heaped praise on the defender.

Spence joined Tottenham in 2022 from Middlesbrough and he was sent out on loan after failing to impress at the North London club. He seems to have adapted to Premier League football now, and he is an important player for Ange Postecoglou.

Seaman feels that the Tottenham defender has improved in terms of positioning and decision-making. He also hailed Spence’s frightening pace when it comes to recovering balls.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper also likened the defender to his former teammate Kolo Toure, who struggled with positioning and decision-making when he initially moved to Arsenal. However, he improved as time went on and established himself as an indispensable asset for the Gunners.

“He’s got better and better him,” said Seaman on his YouTube podcast. “When I first saw him, when he first came in… he was a bit like when Kolo Toure came to Arsenal.

“He was like the the schoolboy in the playground, just followed the ball everywhere, and Djed was getting like caught out of position quite a bit, but now he’s like (much better).

“The more he’s playing in that position (left-back) he’s getting used to it, and his pace is frightening – he had a one-v-one with somebody and like totally outpaced them, easy.”

Spence is still relatively young, and he could improve further with coaching and experience. He could develop into an indispensable asset for the club in the coming months.
