Arise, Sir Gareth? Southgate 2/1 to be knighted this year

By The Boy -

GARETH SOUTHGATE IS 2/1 WITH LADBROKES to be knighted in the next New Year Honours List.
After overseeing a famous victory against Germany on Tuesday night, the bookies make the England boss just 2/1 to become a Sir in the next 12 months.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes told The Boy “Southgate’s got the whole nation believing once again for the second time in as many major tournaments, and there’s every chance he receives royal recognition later this year as a result.”

I don’t think they’ll give him a knighthood unless we win the tournament. Mind you, I for one wouldn’t mind seeing the honours system scrapped; they give honours out like confetti these days and the whole thing has been massively devalued in my view.

Not this time; I think we’ll probably win the tournament.

You can’t argue with a world cup semi final and now success at the euros can you? Good luck to him.

To get to the final, England will have to overcome some quite resilient but unspectacular sides (the Ukraine and Denmark/Czech Rep.), which might be tricky. Then it’s probably Belgium/Italy/Spain.

Italy struggled to do much against Austria, Belgium were being hammered by Portugal and deserved to get knocked out (generally they play horrible football), and Spain are getting the groove back, but are still hugely suspect in defence. Croatia weren’t all that and scored three past them.

I agree that England haven’t won a thing yet and the knighthood talk is premature, but there is a chance, and maybe more so than in the last few tournaments.

If the Czechs go out, I would love to see Harry lift the trophy.

Now we’re in the knockout stage it seems he is quite prepared to sacrifice creatifity to include defensively minded players so as not to lose.It bores me silly. And Harry sees nothing of the ball unless he drops deep to get it.

Any odds on him getting knighted with the England Band playing in the background?

If we win but not because of one match. We are just as likely to underwhelm in the next match and get dumped out by the Ukraine They are a side unified by their nations fight for survival against Russian control and have a legend managing them, They will be a very difficult opponent to overcome unless we start to play with mitre creativity in the midfield. .

It’s typical of us to honour somebody who has not actually won anything. How on earth are we favourites to win when we serve up those dregs every game and Italy,Spain or Belgium are likely to beat us.Plus we have played every match at home so far, whereas most teams have had lots of travel to contend with. How is that a level playing field?

It happens at every tounament and we always blow it.I’d like to be proved wrong, but i doubt it.
