Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is keen on reinforcing the team’s attack ahead of next season.
The Australian manager has done reasonably well in his first season in the Premier League. While Tottenham could have finished in a Champions League position, their form towards the end of the season cost them a place in the top four.
They couldn’t sustain their performance levels because of the lack of depth in attack. Following the pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Melbourne on Wednesday, Postecoglou was asked about the team’s transfer plans.
While talking about the need to reinforce their attack, the former Celtic manager said to Football.London that Spurs will need to add more quality to the attack.
“Yeah, absolutely. It’s no secret. You saw the way we finished the season. We obviously lost Richy and Timo as well with injuries but we’re fairly light in that area. We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up. We’re in Europe as well next year so we’ll have more games and it’s definitely an area of the park we’ll need to strengthen.”
The Tottenham manager feels they do not have adequate depth in attack to challenge the best teams in the division. Injuries to Richarlison and Timo Werner didn’t help their cause towards the end of the season.
Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic were both available in the initial phase of the season. But, Solomon picked up a long-term injury while Perisic left the club in the winter. As the season progressed, Postecoglou realised the need for more options in the attack.
With the North London club qualifying for the Europa League, they will have to deal with more games next season and a deeper squad is imperative.
They are expected to push for a quality number nine along with a winger to give Postecoglou enough firepower to challenge for trophies.
