Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has lauded Tottenham’s goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for his exceptional performance against Chelsea.
Carragher expressed astonishment at Vicario’s keeping skills, describing him as a “revelation” since joining Tottenham.
Tottenham made a strong start in the game, scoring within the first 6 minutes, and they found the net again shortly afterward, only for the goal to be disallowed.
The game changed when Tottenham defender Cristian Romero was shown a red card for a rash challenge on Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea getting a subsequent penalty which they scored.
This followed by injuries to James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, two of their best players.
And Spurs night got worse when Destiny Udogie just 10 minutes into the second received his second yellow of the night resulting in a red card, reducing them to 9 men.
Ange Postecoglou surprised everyone with a 0-7-1 formation, with 7 players holding an extremely high defensive line.
Despite the flood of Chelsea attacks, Guglielmo Vicario’s heroics kept Tottenham in the game for the longest of time with him making numerous world-class saves and clearances.
Chelsea eventually scored three quick goals towards the end of the match, securing a 4-1 victory, ending Ange Postecoglou’s unbeaten run in the league.
And Carragher speaking on Sky Sports admitted he was stunned by the goalkeeper’s heroics.
Carragher emphasised that Vicario’s performance was unprecedented, especially in terms of his sweeping abilities.
“Guglielmo Vicario was absolutely sensational, people say the phrase ‘sweeper keeper’, but I’ve never seen anything like this!”
“He has been an absolute revelation since he came to Tottenham.”
Vicario has indeed been a solid signing for Spurs and has provided them with a reliable presence between the sticks.
