Ange Postecoglou has now hit back at the backlash for his recent comments about winning a trophy in his second season.
Tottenham will look to return to winning ways when they square up against Championship outfit Coventry City in the Carabao Cup third round. Having suffered a defeat at the hands of Arsenal in the derby, Ange Postecoglou’s men will be under a lot of pressure and this game could help them gain some momentum.
Post the defeat to arch-rivals, Postecoglou went on to defend himself with comments about always winning a trophy in his second season at all the clubs that he has previously managed. The Australian manager was heavily criticised after he pledged to help Spurs end their trophy drought.
The former Celtic boss has now now come out to defend his comments after receiving a lot of backlash. During the pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Coventry City,
Postecoglou said via Fabrizio Romano: “It’s amazing, isn’t it? I just stated a fact. Am I supposed to just lie or just say it never happened? But do you really think it’s me sort of boasting?
“It’s just confusing to me that people are making a big deal out of something. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to answer something that is true.
“I’ve just said something that’s true, and it seems like it’s upset a lot of people for some reason.”
The North London club have only won one trophy in the 21st century. They lifted the League Cup back in 2008 and have been waiting for a major silverware ever since.
Spurs have had a poor start to the new season with just one win in their first four league outing. Following their third consecutive defeat to the Gunners at home, Postecoglou was quite bold to claim that he could win a trophy in the 2024/25 season.
The Australian manager’s comment received a lot of backlash but he feels his words have been taken out of proportion as he has just stated a fact. He is surprised to see that people have made a big deal out of it.
