Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has expressed his belief that Ben Davies will be a crucial player for the team in the upcoming season.
As the summer rebuild continues, Postecoglou is using the pre-season period to assess his squad and determine the best team for his attacking style of play.
The club has already made several new signings, including James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, and Manor Solomon, while securing permanent deals for Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro.
With a number of players expected to leave, Postecoglou is filtering out those who fit his style and those who do not.
Davinson Sanchez is among the players linked with a move away to Spartak Moscow, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reportedly attracting interest from Atletico Madrid.
The left-back position is currently uncertain, with Ryan Sessegnon having undergone a surgery on his hamstring issue. He is likely to be out till September. And with Ivan Perisic’s wing-back role redundant, his future at the club is uncertain as well.
Sergio Reguilon is also linked with a potential exit, with reports suggesting that Postecoglou “does not trust him.”
This leaves Destiny Udogie as the only natural left-back option at the club.
However, Postecoglou has identified Ben Davies as a player who could excel in the left-back role.
He praised Davies, stating that he possesses all the attributes he looks for in a full-back, particularly for his attacking playing style.
Currently, Davies has been deployed as a center-back, but Postecoglou envisions him as a top-quality left-back for the team.
He said:
“I think Ben has all the attributes I look for in a full back, particularly the way we play. At the moment he’s doing a job at CB but my inclination is that he will be a very very good left-back for us.”
With Postecoglou viewing Davies and Udogie as potential options for the left-back position in the upcoming season, it appears that the focus will remain on signing center-backs to strengthen the defensive line.
