Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has only named the six players Tottenham should keep after the Newcastle thrashing while urging the club to sell the rest of them.
He also singled out Cristian Romero’s performance calling out his inconsistency, suggesting that he is “all over the place”.
The match against Newcastle was crucial for Tottenham’s chances of securing a top-four finish, but they were thrashed 6-1.
But the match was all but over inside the first ten minutes as Newcastle netted three goals, two from Jacob Murphy and one from Joelinton. Isak added a brace to make it 5-0 in just 20 minutes.
Harry Kane managed to pull one back for Spurs early in the second half, but Callum Wilson’s strike made it 6-1, putting the game well and truly beyond reach.
O’Hara was scathing in his criticism of Tottenham, saying that “not one of them showed any pride or passion for the football club.” He called on the players to show more effort and commitment, saying that the fans expect at least that much.
He also urged the club to sell most of its players, saying that only a few should be kept, including Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pedro Porro, and Oliver Skipp. He praised Skipp’s passion for the club but admitted that he lacks quality.
Discussing Spurs’ performance on TalkSport (9am), he said:
“They are a disgrace. Watching that yesterday was an absolute disaster. They should be ashamed of themselves.”
“Not one of them showed any pride or passion for the football club. We have all played in games when its poor but he very least (the fans) can expect is a level of effort or commitment.
“It just made me ashamed of being a spurs fan. Arsenal have got passion and desire. That lot had nothing to offer the Tottenham shirt, and they shouldn’t be wearing it again .
“Those players are totally switched off.”
“The ones that have got to leave are the ones who don’t want to be there.“
“(The ones who) show no desire, hunger or passion. You can be a bang average player but give everything for the shirt.
“People are going to accept you being average. What people cannot accept is you not showing heart and passion
“The only people I would really want to keep are (Harry) Kane, (Heung-Min) Son, (Pierre-Emile) Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pedro Porro because he’s a new signing.
“Oliver Skipp, I like him. He lacks quality but he’s got passion for the club. The rest of them, get rid. Even Romero. You never know which Romero is going to turn up. He is all over the place.”
O’Hara suggested a major squad overhaul in the summer and it perhaps is something that might be needed but a lot will depend on who their next permanent manager will be.
The humiliation at the hands of Newcastle should serve as a warning for the owners who need to financially back the manager whoever it is if they want to continue fighting among the big teams in the league.
