It’s been a rollercoaster ride for Ryan Sessegnon in his three years at Tottenham Hotspur. A lot was expected from the England international when Spurs spent £25-million to bring the 21-year-old over from Fulham to north London.
However, the move to Spurs hasn’t gone as smoothly as Sessegnon would have liked since arriving in 2019. Sessegnon spoke with ESPN about sourcing his psychologist for sessions over Zoom after suffering another fitness setback.
“I first started speaking to someone when I went to Germany because there was a little spell where… at the start, it started well and then there was a little problem injury-wise,” Sessegnon said. “And I started thinking too much about my game. I wasn’t feeling free.”
“I wasn’t doing things that I was doing before, so I started speaking to someone about the mental side of the game and how doubts can creep into your mind, distract you and put you down. So it was more about bringing self-belief and positivity into your thoughts.”
Sessegnon has encountered four different permanent managers, one caretaker, constant injury issues, and a loan spell in Germany during the pinnacle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nonetheless, the left-back has seen recent success since the arrival of manager Antonio Conte until his recent injury. The young player has taken advantage of no player claiming either of the wing-back positions.
After another injury, Sessegnon hopes to find the form he had before his setback and help Tottenham down the final stretch of fixtures and clinch a spot in the top four.

He just needs to remember his performance in the 2-2 draw against Pool that we should have won, and play like that all the time.
He’s always seemed to be like ‘a rabbit caught in the headlights’ so hopefully the psychologist has made him realise he IS a talented player & start to believe in himself more.
Just needs to work on his body conditioning/physical strength to rid himself of the niggling injuries.
