Cuti Romero Analysis vs. Newcastle

Romero is a disciplined player in respect of the space he operates in, however, we can see he was occasionally required to step into Emerson’s space when the occasion arose.

Cuti’s passing is adequate but as we’ve discussed previously, the accuracy needs to be in the 90th percentile for all our defenders. Our ‘best center-back in Serie A’ has so far struggled to better 83% in the Premier League, and against the Bar Codes, Romero’s passing accuracy dipped to 78%. Perhaps, if he spent more time in a Tottenham shirt, opposed to floating about Europe in an Argentinian one, it might improve?

Long passes need work too, as to date his average success rate is 47.6%, and against Newcastle who are flirting with relegation, that fell to 33%.

Losing the ball 11 times (of which 6 occasions were in his own half) is not great at all. In short, there’s plenty to build upon, but the forecast is a simple one. This lad needs to get with the program sooner rather than later.

Our dearest purchase of the summer, and I don’t get the impression we’re getting absolute value for money, so far.

No, I do rate him. I think he has the potential to be a very good player for us. However I think that is some concern about his height and physique. He has a similar build to Ben White, who looked great at Brighton, but has struggled at Arsenal without the greater height and physicality of Duffy and Dunk alongside him.

He flew back on Friday straight after playing a match. Gave Saturday to recover he played 90 mins. I’d be jet lagged for a fortnight. Think some settling in is allowed before we get too critical.

You don’t rate him then? I do

The fact that he was out-muscled (as well as out-thought) by Callum Wilson for the first Newcastle goal, doesn’t provide a convincing argument that he can “more than cope!”

Pair him with Rodon,he’s physically imposing.

I disagree. Re height and strength. He can more than cope.

I thought he played better against Villa, but similar to Emerson we must be patient, as there will be ‘growing pains’. I think he has the ability to become a top class player, but I have some concern over his physique. He certainly doesn’t lack aggression, but physically he is somewhat lightweight and not that tall in stature for a CB in the EPL.

He seems to be only about 6′ and not even as big physically as Harry Kane. As a CB, this would put him at a physical disadvantage against certain strikers in the EPL, such as Ings, Wood, Lukaku, etc and would likely require him being paired up with a stronger, more physically imposing CB, like Dier (only preferably not Dier, but Dier’s replacement!).
