Are Tottenham really reigniting interest in Wolves’ Matt Doherty? I don’t see it at all

It was January 2019 that Matt Doherty and Tottenham were first mentioned together in respect of a supposed interest in the Dubliner, from the London side. Daniel McDonnell for the Irish Independent penned a piece about Doherty getting a new deal in which he wrote: “His form this term has turned heads and it’s believed that Spurs are monitoring his position.

Doherty is Wolves’ longest serving player, having been plucked from Bohemians for £75,000 in 2010. the 28-year-old also happens to be a right sided wing-back.

Now the deal Doherty signed in 2019 was said to be worth £50,0000 a week, and would run until 2023. Which would make him comparably inexpensive in the scheme of things (Serge Aurier was on £70,000 a week), however why would Matt want to come to Spurs?

Alasdair Gold believes negotiations are now underway.

Wolves finished directly beneath us in the Premier League, so could it be the lure of playing for José Mourinho?

Has the lad fallen out with Nuno Espirito Santo?

Er… that’s unlikely. Here’s what he told the Express & Star back in December.

If Alasdair Gold is onto something – and hasn’t selected the Wolves man simply on the basis that he potentially ticks a number of boxes – then this could be a fascinating move.

For me, this equates to Tottenham having sold Michael Dawson to Chelsea in 2014. I simply don’t see it. I don’t see it at all.

Homegrown ✅ Also Wolves aren’t in Europe next season. At £12m Wolves would be making £11m profit on a player who gave them 11 years of service.

He’s allegedly worth £14.4million according to Transfermarkt, which I find ‘wishful’.

He was linked to Arsenal as a possible swap with Maitland Niles going the other way,but I couldn’t see it happening as Doherty wouldn’t want to take a step down.

Doherty was linked with Arsenal, Mourinho is supposed to have said he knows the right back he wants and he is an experienced player, so this might have something in it. Very attacking, he makes goals and scores them. Another Spurs fan favourite in the making like Hojbjerg. If true then I’m beginning to like the shape of things. Might be a tad expensive though.
