There is one huge reason why Harry Winks is very unlikely to leave Tottenham this summer

It has to be said that the latest transfer gossip from the Sun this morning claiming that Man City are interested in signing Harry Winks was a bit of a surprise.

Not so much the £40m price tag but the fact that Pep Guardiola would be interested in the 24-year-old. He just does not come across as a City type of player.

Personally, if City was to offer up £40m for Winks I would expect Daniel Levy to snap their hands off and take that money in double-quick time, however, there is one huge reason why I just cannot see this deal happening.

As things stand right now Tottenham is struggling to stay within the home grown rule.

So what is the home grown rule?

Well, Premier League clubs can have a maximum of 25 players in their senior squad. At least eight of them must be home grown.

A home grown player, as some think, does not have to be an English player but rather a player that has been at a Premier League club for three years before they reach the age of 21.

That means that the 25 man squad that Spurs put forward next season must have at least eight players that spent three years before the age of 21 at a Premier League club, so the likes of Eric Dier would not qualify.

Now, without knowing who will be in the first team squad next season or who will even be at the club it is difficult to say what the situation will be for Spurs but the fact is that they are struggling to make that number up and with the sale of Kyle Walker-Peters it has made it even more difficult.

Of course, Spurs could sell Winks and reinvest that money in a home grown player from another Premier League club but that is far easier said than done and generally speaking not cheap.

There are not that many home grown players that can hold down a first-team spot in the way Winks does available for £40m.

That is why I do not see Winks leaving Tottenham this summer because he is almost irreplaceable because he is both a home grown player and a first-team regular.

Finally, I am no expert on all this, however, the Football London Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold touches on the problems Spurs are facing with the home grown rule in his most recent Youtube video here. It is well worth a watch to get a better understanding of the current status at Tottenham with regards to home grown players.

I saw that it is a real problem for THFC – is for anyone else I didnt realise we were one of the worst hit by it scrabbling round for rules – Davies is a forriner for Europe but home grown for PL.
Anyway as much as I would like to see the back of “Iron” Harry we wont but some of the players mentioned in here will go.

Yes the home grown rule means clubs are forced to buy people to keep on the bench. Which is silly. It’s also a bit nationalistic, and done for the national team of course, but still …. but with Brexit on the horizon, no doubt we’ll soon be forced to have 25 home grown players in the squad, as we won’t be able to afford anyone from the EU or elsewhere. Now is the time to invest in …… me. Worldly advice isn’t cheap folks
