23-year-old admits he wants to ‘play for Tottenham’, confident of succeeding in the PL

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur signed Djed Spence from Middlesbrough when Antonio Conte was in charge.

The full-back barely had any opportunities under the Italian manager since joining in the summer of 2022 and he was sent on loan to Rennes in January 2023. Spence joined Leeds United at the start of this season. He failed to hold down a regular starting spot at Elland Road and he was sent back to Tottenham in January.

Since then, the North London outfit have sent him out on loan again to Genoa and the defender is now hoping to get his career back on track with regular football in Italy. However, Spence is hopeful of making a name for himself in the Premier League. The 23-year-old believes that he has the attributes to succeed in the Premier League.

“I felt comfortable playing in the Premier League,” he said to the Athletic. “It’s a big step up but I’m more than capable of doing it. I’ve got the physical attributes and everything else to go with it to play in that league.”

He has also revealed his desire to establish himself as an important player for the North London club.

“I want to play for Tottenham. I want to be a big part of the plan but we’ve got to see how things go, have a discussion with the manager and everyone. It’s a big difference with the new manager, I did pre-season with him — he’s a good guy, he has good training sessions, he likes to play football, it’s a new environment at the club. I think everyone’s enjoying it and doing well, I’m pleased for them.”

Tottenham already have players like Pedro Porro and Everton Royal as their right-back options. It will be interesting to see if they decide to cash in on Spence permanently at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old has previously shown his quality in the Championship, and there is no doubt that he is a talented player. With the right guidance and experience, he could develop into a reliable Premier League full-back.

Time will tell whether Tottenham are prepared to give him that opportunity.
