Vin(egar) Strokes

Vin(egar) Strokes

Vin(diction) may be pushing it, but seeing Vincent Janssen score in open play was a very welcome sight indeed.

A very welcome goal, particularly given it was against the instinct of Mauricio Pochettino.

The Dutchman wasn’t a questionable purchase, the delay in signing him was as it ever was, down to THFC trying to trim a few shekels off the asking price. Something I am told we are still attempting to do with the Davy Klaassen deal.

I don’t believe Vinny has been managed very well at all here and I’m still confused as to why Kane had to start today’s game.

What I do believe is that is has been wholly dishonest of Spurs to buy a ‘second’ striker and then make him the 3rd or 4th choice one.

What did we learn today? Not much, Millwall failed to live up to the hype.

They were in fact, rather miserable.

Kane you believe it, there’s a new blog

  • gus March 13, 2017 at 9:34 am

I was pleased with the overall team selection, but it was uneccessary to risk HK. Hopefully we won’t pay a high price for putting him in harms way. I’m pleased for Vinny that he got a nice finish, sure it was only Millwall, but it was well taken and hopefully it will give him a small scrap of hope for better things. If HK is out sadly I don’t see MoPo playing Vinny straight off, he will probably go for Son up front like he did early in the season

    • Gloster1861 March 13, 2017 at 9:40 am

It was a smart finish into the corner. I think Vinnie will be first attacking sub for those times we are two up in matches.

LOL. Was it like watching a lion cub make his first “kill” while his mum holds her prey down?

        • Gloster1861 March 13, 2017 at 9:51 am

He still had to strike it cleanly past two defenders into a small target area. He did it well, shame he didn’t score with his header though.

          • Gus March 13, 2017 at 9:57 am

Yup. A brace would have seen him climb in the gaffer’s estimation. To coin a phrase MoPo’s wife could have slotted that into the goal

Was that you Tommy getting smacked in the mouth by that Millwall supporter? Can’t have been, you don’t go to games. How’s that 55″” TV and the armchair. You prick.

It’s Harry Kane who dominates most of the back pages this morning.

The Telegraph say he could miss the rest of the season after limping off early in Sunday’s 6-0 FA Cup win over Millwall.

    Back this eve.

    • Camus March 13, 2017 at 9:20 am

Nice one, Telegraph. He could also retire from football today.

                      Cheers Andy..
It’s all about balance…. I can return anytime, have offers, but we are not greedy folks, and i prefer to have time with the kids, instead of some random Nanny or whatever influencing their characters at an early stage… sort of what i didn’t have as a kid, so you always promise not to make the mistakes of your parents, and i am sticking by that promise

                    • SpurAndy 🍒π March 13, 2017 at 9:02 am

Couldn’t agree more Bob. I was lucky to have my mum always there during the day when I was a kid and again me and the wife wanted to bring our kids up without her having to work and we were lucky enough to manage it. I know a lot of people prefer to or have to work so understand it’s not for everyone whether they want to or not.

                    • sideshowbob March 13, 2017 at 9:11 am

Seems like we chose similar paths… I do get the ridicule sometimes, ….ahh lazy shite, ….don’t want to work…. housewife etc… but when others credit you on the behaviour of your kids or are amazed by the serenity within the home, then the balance is apparent. Not that i care what folks think really.. My wife pushes and achieves great things in her field and i offer the tranquility or sanctuary of a peaceful home.

                    • SpurAndy 🍒π March 13, 2017 at 9:22 am

Back in Bale’s last season the Spurs medics had him back playing in 17 days from a similar ankle/foot twist. Could’ve been a dodgy doc and injection though. I get the feeling we will be incredibly lucky to see a repeat of that feat.

Unfortunately that was a targeted tackle on Harry boy but it back fired on the Doggers. Hope he recovers quicker than they think.

The defender wiped out Harry. Late tackle, it was ridiculous. It was calculated to take Harry out of the game.

    • Camus March 13, 2017 at 7:58 am

You think? I thought it was just the momentum carried him through and Kane had the misfortune to place his striking foot on the turf right between the sliding defenders legs, resulting in the old ankle twist. One where you wish he’d just stood on the player instead (as I’ve seen done).

      • Gloster1861 March 13, 2017 at 9:37 am

I think the defender took the opportunity to deliver a heavy challenge. Probably not malicious but to ‘let Kane know’ he’d be getting strong armed all match.

This thing is going to play out one of two ways. Either we have the upper hand over other teams at Wembley because of all current English teams we are the most accustomed to playing there, or the scars of renting Wembley have been etched in too deep and finally deserving to play there won’t change the mentality.

One lucky omen perhaps (but then again probably not!), but in my third season of following the Spurs, we won the Cup in 1967 and we won our sixth round match (or at least the replay) 6-0!

  • Poxy March 13, 2017 at 2:42 am

I think in the likely extended absence of Kane, we need to consider the possibility of playing two strikers and perhaps fielding both Son and Janssen. Opportunity now perhaps for Janssen to step up to the plate!

  • Arcane March 13, 2017 at 12:19 am

    “ethan March 12, 2017 at 5:46 pm
Hindsight is 20/20 of course but I blame Poch for playing Kane today. Millwall is shit and there was no need for Kane to start. He needed a break more than Eriksen for me. No Kane, no Rose – 2 of our most important players.”

What I blame Poch for is:

getting us through to a cup semi.

    a feast of goals.

correctly judging that this is the point when we can afford to take a cup seriously, despite an under-resourced squad.

allowing captain Kane, who always wants to play, a deserved opportunity for cup glory and to keep up his goalscoring momentum.

not relying on a striker who is evidently still capable of missing an absolute a clear opportunity (the header – which makes his record in this game 50% for chances taken – still iffy), in a match that now means the tangible possibility of silverware – something many on here have been baying for, though not I.

realising that Vincent’s problem is now psychological, as Gladys’ sob story confirms, but he’s not a basket case who needs mollycoddling and telling we love him and believe in him, he’s a young professional footballer with everything to prove, and will now probably respond better ( if he’s ever going to) to some hard reality. He needs to find some fight, some self-belief, and if being angry at his boss for a (wrongly) perceived injustice is what it takes then so be it. He got it spot on.

And that’s from someone who actually stated in the prematch blog that my main worry was injuries, and who regards top 4 as the key goal.

I suspect Millwall is not actually as shit as you think they Is, sir, but there’s certainly more malodorous nonsense on here tonight than is justified.

    So sad. Wavy hands.

    • Arcane March 13, 2017 at 12:41 am

Ethan I share your disappointment, and by rights this should be aimed at the evil provocateur up top, and others who should know better. I just couldn’t resist some fun with your grammar, innit.

H, you’re a very naughty boy – “it was against the instinct of Mauricio Pochettino” my arse – but I have convincing ITK that it was against your better instinct, so I’ll forgive you.

      Poch roolz.

    • Ethan March 13, 2017 at 2:22 am

No one said anything about playing Jansen. With or without Kane and Jansen, we would have won this today. If you can’t beat lowly Millwall without Kane you don’t deserve to win the FA Cup. Anyway, yes the FA Cup is a trophy but it’s a small club mentality to value winning the FA Cup over finishing top 4. Arse have won the FA Cup in 2 of the last 4 seasons but is that enough to satisfy them about Wenger? No. And it jolly well shouldn’t. Because at least unlike you, the lot down the road don’t have a small club mentality! Yes I know top 4 is not a trophy but finishing top 4 and qualifying for the champs league regularly 1. Brings huge financial gains 2. Brings huge status gains enabling us to attract better players to the club 3. Deprives another top club in the premiership of the first two. Over time regular champions league qualification will raise our status as a club and better enable us to challenge for the trophies that really matter – the premiership and the champions league. We didn’t need Kane today. We needed Kane to spearhead our challenge for top 4. Targeting the FA Cup above all else is a small club mentality and at least the lot down the road realize that.

      • MiT March 13, 2017 at 3:28 am

The part about hindsight would apply as well if Kane had not played, and the shots had not gone in. Your outlook is miserable, man. You are on point about consistent CL play bringing in greater opportunities and prestige over time. However, that does not equate to throwing an FA quarterfinal to the wolves. When a person believes that the squad is not capable of taking on the competitive rounds of the FA Cup at the same time as taking on the challenge of CL qualification… especially considering that the FA at this juncture does not require midweek play… that is the outlook of a small, scared, feeble mind.

Just watched it again. I don’t care what money Alderweild is on but give him a massive pay rise because he is the most important and solid player we have had in a long time. He’s the platform. Trippier was super involved today too. Best number 2 we have had in ages. Davies don’t really fulfil that position in the same way. Wanyama in the first half reminded me of The Thing. Great debut season. Looks like he is gonna start grabbing goals too. I can see what Potch sees in Winks. Eriksen was fantastic but I wish he was tougher. If he added tackling and sticking his boot in a bit he would be sensational. Alli was pretty good but Son really stepped it up today. Feel proud of them. Hope we draw Utd cos they are shite!

    • Poxy March 13, 2017 at 2:31 am

  • MiT March 12, 2017 at 10:31 pm

Some of you wet bag types could not find happiness or satisfaction in a rainbow full of puppies and meat pies.

Spurs played tremendously well, beat what was in front of them, and sent a bunch of street monsters home with what they deserved… absolutely nothing. They broke down a packed box to do it.

I cannot imagine the howls if Pochettino had not played Kane, and the shots had not gone in.

Good grief almighty, some of you are miserable, contagious cunts. If I had seats anywhere near you, I would eat nothing but ramen noodles for six straight months if I had to, just to be able to afford to buy different tickets far away from you. That is how freakin toxic some of you are.

I hope that Kane is all right, but others need to step up, and life needs to go on. If Kane would have an off day, the same lot would have been going off about that. Nothing but smelly shit coming from you regardless of how events transpire. Piss off with that. Seriously.

    • East Stand March 12, 2017 at 10:24 pm

I think a lot of what he puts on is front, he actually played slightly wimpy and ‘wronged’ cockney lads. Once he got into his late 20’she started making out he’s the hardest fucker to ever walk the planet.

I don’t mind him that much, I can’t take him seriously and I’m not sure he takes himself that seriously either. He’s earning a living from it so he hams it up…

I could give many examples of disgusting Millwall behaviour but one was some skinny bloke with specs on about 40 years old with his 8 year old son.

Spurs fans cheering and all the dad did was call Spurs fans wankers, cnuts, etc and get very very angry.

His son bless him looked absolutely disturbed by his dad’s behaviour and kept nudging dad and telling him to stop whilst having tears in his eyes.

Dad told son to fuck off or he’d a get a good hiding.

Dad was spoken to re this and dad got very densive and swore at police.

Dad was nicked and child taken into police protection until mum could get there.

            Disgraceful.

If you think about it, Sissoko kind of made a goal today with one of those direct runs of his. He’s like a steam train stuck in 5th gear and careering off a cliff. It’s a lottery as to whether he gets the pass away. On 2nd thoughts, probably don’t think about it.

  • Mattspurs March 12, 2017 at 8:10 pm

I’m beginning to think Poch is somehow trying to force Janssen into a dark pit of despair from which he’ll emerge better, stronger and full of goals. Bringing on Eriksen smacked of sadism, waiting til we were 4-0 up against a league one team to bring him on quite cruel. Could have been worse and could have bought Onomah on again instead!
I think it’s the first time I’ve ever seen a team’s worst player score a hat trick.
Best comment walking out was from a scumbag fan “you outplayed us but we outsung you for forty minutes”

    • Superspoz 🏆 March 12, 2017 at 8:21 pm

  • BigChiv March 12, 2017 at 8:03 pm

Janssen to Poch “You came for me, you bought me”

Nice of Gladys to confirm that Vinnie was a Poch pick and not a ‘take it or leave it’ ultimatum from Levy.

    • Harry Hotspur March 12, 2017 at 8:08 pm

Nice try dickko but I think a sane person would grasp Vinny was referring to ‘Spurs’ – of course you’re not sane and hence the confusion.

  • Gloster1861 March 12, 2017 at 7:54 pm

In Kane’s absence we will still score goals, only fewer of them. Defence is now all, our five man defence continues to hang tough and we can win games 1-0 or 2-0 if need be.

      • McG ⚽⚽ March 12, 2017 at 7:30 pm

Given this is supposedly a repeat of his previous injury, & the third injury in the last three years, I guess we’ll muddle through. Not making excuses, we need more firepower, but we know what the score is…

      • UnkleTaff March 12, 2017 at 7:40 pm

When Kane was injured earlier this season he missed five league games. We won two of them (one of which was against City) and drew the other three. Two of those games were at home, the other three were away.

Evening glass half fullers. I did see Kaneinho saunter off without assistance. So it may not be that serious. Back by April first I hope.

  • 61SpursNut🌰 March 12, 2017 at 6:50 pm

Today, I was mostly watching Millwall getting whacked. Being a survivalist by nature, I crept around the east side of the stadium along Worcester Avenue. The coast was clear so I scuttled deftly towards the turnstile at the corner of Park Lane and made my ingress with a minimum of fuss, despite being molested by a stout fellow with a high vis top on. As soon as I got in the ground I headed for the segregation area, block 42, where I was lucky enough to attract the attention of our resident rozzer, the venerable Still Nil Nil, who was fraternising with a steward whilst mocking the Neanderthals from the neutral zone. I caught his eye and he trundled over with what looked like a grin (wind, maybe?) upon his bestubbled visage and his right hand outstretched. I took his aforementioned right hand in mine and exchanged platitudes only to be interrupted by tribal grunting from afar which curtailed the liaison almost as soon as it began. This was supposed to be a “rest” day for him!

Retreating to the purveyors of fine food and drink downstairs, I was dismayed to learn that I had not a penny to my name about my person. Fortunately I didn’t have long to wait for my cash reserve to arrive in the form of FoFty. Cheers for the coffee, old bean! We took our place right at the top of the South Stand and awaited the tardy Caspur, who was delayed for a short while, he assures me not of his own making. What a fine affair it all turned out to be and was made all the more pleasurable with Cas to the left of me and Fofty to the right, right at the top of the Park Lane end. Cas generously offered me a pie at half time, which I politely declined as I had a belly full of Aldi breaded haddock, nicely seasoned wedges and a portion of petit pois, ingested immediately before I left for the match. I quickly regretted this decision as Cas to the left of me and Fofty to the right began munching avariciously upon their fare, thereby surrounding me with an almost irritable aroma.

As for the game itself, I mentioned that we whacked them. Our fans were in fine fettle throughout and I am of the opinion that we gave them a rather punishing lesson in fans vocal participation with a good mix of some classic and innovative choons. They really didn’t stand a chance. I particularly liked one of the final efforts on 80 minutes, which Taff referred to earlier:

    #He scores when he wants
    #He scores when he wants
    #Vincent Janssen
    #He scores when he wants

I knew he’d come good, and Cas was particularly chuffed with his effort. And there was still enough time for Son to cap a wonderful team performance with his hat trick.

Days like this are what makes the Lane so special and the old girl will be sorely missed.

Really enjoyed that, Lane was rocking. I’ve not been since December, and the stadium progress is astonishing. Quite an emotional day, 6-0 definitely helped. Millwall were pance.

    • Caspurs♿️ March 12, 2017 at 6:49 pm

FoF, let me know the next home game you’re going too, it’s more than likely gonna be 7-0. 👍

  • UnkleTaff March 12, 2017 at 6:06 pm

Funny how every team we beat convincingly is casually dismissed as being shit. Prior to today Millwall were on a 17-game unbeaten run having conceded just three goals in 2017.

We were very good today and (as usual) the lads deserve more credit than they’re currently getting.

    • Harry Hotspur March 12, 2017 at 6:08 pm

What league are Millwall in, Champions?

      • Camus March 12, 2017 at 6:12 pm

They looked worse than Fulham who, funnily enough, are in the league above them.

        • Harry Hotspur March 12, 2017 at 6:39 pm

This was as important a win as the Arses over Lincoln. Means to an end. Can we looks as ‘stunning’ against the remaining teams? We’ll soon find out.

          • East Stand March 12, 2017 at 7:16 pm

Yeah, I didn’t rate Woolwich strolling past Lincon much more than what we did today, although on paper Millwall are the better side.

More significant a win for us than the Bandits Of The Arses as the Vinny love-in was well overdue and with Kane spraining his ankle (hopefully)…

    • ethan March 12, 2017 at 6:12 pm

You go ahead and take satisfaction in thrashing Millwall. I’m guttered that our only world class player may not be able to play in the final North London derby EVER at White Hart Lane. Can you imagine the stick we would have to take if we lose that one?

  • AccringtonSpurs March 12, 2017 at 6:05 pm

Southampton will be tough without Kane. I say stick Dele up top.

  • AccringtonSpurs March 12, 2017 at 6:01 pm

32 shots and 15 of em were on target. thats better than our usual huff and puff.

  • UnkleTaff March 12, 2017 at 6:00 pm

    v Millwall

    v Sunderland

Two games out. Three at most.

    • Camus March 12, 2017 at 6:09 pm

The media are saying we fear he may be out for the season, but you may be right.

    • jfdit March 12, 2017 at 6:10 pm

hopefully you’re right, if not time for the squad to pull together & do the business

keep clean sheets & take our chances, semi without Kane will be tough all the same

  • Camus March 12, 2017 at 5:59 pm

I’ve missed this time of the season. There’s always something to worry about / agonise over / wear pants on one’s head for. Exciting, isn’t it?

  • David Dillenberg March 12, 2017 at 5:56 pm

    FT: Liverpool 2 v Burnley 1
    Liverpool remain 4th.
Arse 5th travelling to freefalling WBA on Sat.

    • Camus March 12, 2017 at 5:57 pm

      It’s looking good then?

    • ethan March 12, 2017 at 5:59 pm

Let’s not worry about the Arse first. We have bigger problems if Kane is out for the season. Without Kane we might not make 4th. This win today against utter dross disguises our lack of firepower upfront in the absence of Kane.

    • Mattspurs March 12, 2017 at 8:21 pm

WBA have lost 2 from last 5 and have been in the same place (8th) for months

  • Dan Pink March 12, 2017 at 5:51 pm

We are never happy against Wycombe he got slated for taking it lightly! May be Kane shouldn’t of started but the intent was there to win the game.

We didn’t have game until next weekend. International break coming up. It won’t be that serious.

Millwall previously dumped out 3 premier league teams there was no way we were going taking this game as a given.

    Great display we march on.

    • Camus March 12, 2017 at 5:56 pm

      “It won’t be that serious”…
He left in a plaster boot and could be out for another 7 weeks. Put the champers on ice for tonight.

  • Real Fan? March 12, 2017 at 5:50 pm

Quarter Final of the FA Cup and we should have benched our main man? Have a word with yourself. You can’t have it both ways. Either you want to win this trophy or you don’t. If you do, the only choice was to start Kane.

In other news, the lads won 2-1 and are in the Final. Hooray!

    • UnkleTaff March 12, 2017 at 5:51 pm

Indeed. We rested Kane against Wycombe and look what almost happened.

    • Spurstacus 💋 March 12, 2017 at 5:52 pm

Ace! Well done. I’d like to come to the final.

      • Real Fan? March 12, 2017 at 6:01 pm

        That would be great mate!

    • SpurAndy 🍒π March 12, 2017 at 6:10 pm

Pleased for our lads and pleased for you and your lads RF. 👍

    • 61SpursNut🌰 March 12, 2017 at 6:51 pm

      Triffic!

  • Spurstacus 💋 March 12, 2017 at 5:49 pm

Any one of the four semi finalists could win the cup and, lets face it, probably will.

    • Camus March 12, 2017 at 5:50 pm

If I were a betting man, I’d wager that one of them might win it.

    • DAVID March 12, 2017 at 5:51 pm

      Mystic Meg strikes again!

    • Mattspurs March 12, 2017 at 8:22 pm

I reckon both the remaining quarter finalists could too

      • Spurstacus 💋 March 12, 2017 at 8:25 pm

        Not both, surely?

  • ethan March 12, 2017 at 5:46 pm

Hindsight is 20/20 of course but I blame Poch for playing Kane today. Millwall is shit and there was no need for Kane to start. He needed a break more than Eriksen for me. No Kane, no Rose – 2 of our most important players.

    • David Dillenberg March 12, 2017 at 5:49 pm

After near cup exist against Wycombe IMO no blame attached to Poch for playing Kane.

    • Spurstacus 💋 March 12, 2017 at 5:51 pm

You blame manager / head coach / man who picks the team for playing Kane today?

      • Camus March 12, 2017 at 5:54 pm

I think that’s what he’s saying, Clive, but let me just confirm…

  • UnkleTaff March 12, 2017 at 5:45 pm

The dates of the semi-finals mean that the Leicester game will need to be rescheduled.

    • Camus March 12, 2017 at 5:53 pm

Monday night Sky hatchet job, no doubt.

  • UnkleTaff March 12, 2017 at 5:41 pm

Credit must go to Son who, even though he was on a hat-trick himself at the time, squared the ball for Janssen to slot home.

    • Spurstacus 💋 March 12, 2017 at 5:46 pm

    • AntSpurs March 12, 2017 at 5:48 pm

      Yep

  • 89Spurs 👁 March 12, 2017 at 5:39 pm

None of the other teams, will be a walk over. I believe that we can do it. Hope Harry’s injury is not that bad, and he recovers quickly. To be able to play an important role in both cup games!

  • DAVID March 12, 2017 at 5:39 pm

Burnley still in this game, they have given Liverpool a far tougher match than we did.

  • DAVID March 12, 2017 at 5:37 pm

How did we fare earlier this season when Kane was injured ?
Hoping he’s back soon although some of the comments at the end of the last blog indicate he will be missing for a few games minimum.

    • Camus March 12, 2017 at 5:52 pm

I think we were a bit shite, if memory serves… When he returned we had the Crimbo run boost.

  • David Dillenberg March 12, 2017 at 5:34 pm

    Second.
Ones to avoid and probably Favourites to lift the cup are Citeh.
    Over and out.

    • AntSpurs March 12, 2017 at 5:48 pm
