Club insider says Tottenham are planning to reward 21-year-old with a new contract

Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a strategic move to further the development of young talent Yago Santiago, with plans for a new contract and a subsequent loan spell in the works.

Since Ange Postecoglou’s appointment, Spurs have prioritised the integration of promising prospects into the senior squad, with Santiago emerging as a standout performer for the U21 side.

The Spanish left-winger has impressed this season, tallying 8 goals and 7 assists in 16 Premier League 2 appearances, showcasing his potential to thrive at higher levels of competition.

Club insider John Wenham revealed that Tottenham are considering rewarding Santiago for his progress with a new three-year contract, acknowledging his significant strides over the past 18 months.

In an interview with Tottenham News, Wenham suggested a strategic loan plan for the 21-year-old, suggesting an initial stint in League One followed by a potential move to the Championship if he maintains his impressive form.

Wenham expressed confidence in Santiago’s ability to make an impact at both levels of English football, emphasising the importance of rewarding his stellar season with an extended contract and an opportunity for further development through loan experience.

He said:

“He’s made some solid progress over the past 18 months, and I was hoping that he would go out on loan in January.

“That didn’t happen, and I think the plan now will be to reward him with a new three-year contract before sending him out on loan next season.

“If it were up to me, he would go out to League One first, and then if he is doing well, send him on loan to the Championship for the second half of the season.

“I think this would be a good move for Santiago and a just reward after the fantastic season he has had this year.”

Santiago, who joined Tottenham from Celta Vigo’s academy in 2019, earned his first call-up to the senior squad during the 2022-23 season under Antonio Conte, demonstrating his potential to make a mark on the first-team stage.

Having signed a two-year contract extension last April, which expires in June of the following year, Santiago’s future at Tottenham looks promising as the club seeks to nurture and maximise his potential on the path to success.
