Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, has found himself under the scrutiny of former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood due to apparent weaknesses in his game, particularly in dealing with crosses.
Vicario, who arrived from Serie A side Empoli last summer in an €18.5 million deal, has been a notable addition to the Spurs squad, earning praise for his shot-stopping abilities.
However, Tottenham’s recent string of poor performances, including four consecutive league defeats, has brought attention to Vicario’s perceived shortcomings.
Speaking on The Kelly and Wrighty Show, Sherwood highlighted Vicario’s vulnerability to crosses, suggesting that opposing teams may look to exploit this weakness in future matches.
He said:
“The goalkeeper has been found out, he’s going to be a target now. He seems like he’s very weak from crosses and people are going to target that now. This is the best league in the world with all due respect, it’s not Japan, it’s not Australia.”
Tottenham needs to improve their defending from set pieces
Despite Sherwood’s critique, Vicario has been a consistent presence for Tottenham this season, featuring in every Premier League game and showcasing his shot-stopping abilities on numerous occasions.
He has featured in every Premier League game this season, making 35 appearances, conceding 58 goals, and securing 6 clean sheets.
However, Sherwood’s comments underscore a potential area for improvement in the goalkeeper’s game.
Tottenham manager, Ange Postecoglou, will be looking to address any weaknesses in Vicario’s performance, although as a former left-back himself, he may rely on the expertise of the goalkeeping coaching staff to focus on improving Vicario’s aerial presence.
