The Stability Myth

The Stability Myth

Guest blog from Noel Askew

This Which Premier League teams are in financial trouble?

Which ones have been over the last few years?

I keep seeing people posting on here that Levy has made our club financially stable.

The Premier League TV money has made everyone financially stable!!!

And still other clubs use some of their matchday income, sponsorship deals, advertising, merch sales, corporate income etc towards the team. We don’t.

The new stadium is a plus, though without a return on the pitch it’s pointless.

Levy has pulled the stadium build together. He’s a property lawyer who does property deals. Maybe it’s time he carried on with that side of things and ENIC and handed over the chairman of the football club position to a footballing man.

Twenty years without finishing above Arsenal? Not even once.

Levy build the stadium and get a footballing man in to run the club.

That was the first move Abramovich made at Chelsea- stealing Man U’s CEO. He didn’t pretend to know everything about running a club himself.

Re the above: But Levy can’t bring in a football man as he’d immediately spot that, unlike at chelski, Spurs aren’t owned by a political tax break scandal fugitive who’s happy to limitlessly use his immense wealth to create a high profile wall big enough to protect him from his past. Lewis & Levy are first and foremost in it for a monumental payback on the investment. A football man worth his salt would surely just cause ‘issues’, like taking the investment in Class A talent far more seriously and thus undermining the 1 million net spend in 4 years board room utopia that is Tottingham Hotspuds.

Go on the Steady as she goes!

Nobody’s against winning. It’s more a case of winning SOMETHING, opposed to being a hamster on ‘must get top 4’ wheel. Unless you’re an auditor. Auditors love the hamster wheel thing.

had a look through the accounts for Spurs

if you’re wondering why we ain’t spending money on players it’s being spent on the stadium albeit not the new one

we’re redeeming ENIC’s earlier debts to a tune of £30+m of loan notes which are secured against white hart lane (stadium), obviously we need to redeem these in order to be able to knock it down

  • Mr. Greaves February 25, 2017 at 5:59 pm

Since when has Levy been a property lawyer?

We are hamstrung in terms of football success not simply because of Levy, because it stems from Lewis. His aim is to get higher in the list if the World’s Richest Men, not to make us win stuff.

Nearly 17 years ownership should prove what the aim is, and Lewis has risen through that list year on year, helped by not spending a small bean of his own considerable wealth on the club. …yet some still think we are trying to win things!

    • Caspurs♿️ February 25, 2017 at 6:01 pm

I think his degree is in Estate Management…gives him an understanding of law and accountancy. End of the day though he is just a tight-arse following in the footsteps of Lewis, with the long term plan of making money from us. Once the stadium is built I will be intrigued to know how the money / debts are shifted around! One thing is sure thought the,Tavistock Group / Lewis will be substantially richer, as will Levy and other members of ENIC.

  • Lilywhite without the II February 25, 2017 at 5:04 pm

    Freund or Foe
You`ve spouted absolute shite all morning, and I`m the desperate one?
Manure spent 352mil, and are still not as good as us. Arse 205 mil, and at a similar level to us, yet you use it as proof that we are a comparative failure.
You carry on with your jealousy of Sunderland`s nett spend, or Stoke`s, or Palace`s. It makes perfect sense.

How are Manu not better than us… and we’ve never finished above Ars, and both those teams have one a lot of trophies in the last 15years, a lot!…we have not…we have had a few good squads over the last 8 years or so but its all about the balance sheet for THIER (ENIC) investment, not ours..if we are the 6th most richest club in the league then bloody spend the 6th most amount of dough..all we ask is to invest in the team when it counts, i don’t need to explain when that has been..

    • Freund or Foe February 25, 2017 at 5:12 pm

I`m talking about right now. We finished above Manure last year, and we will again this year. We don`t have a fucking right to finish above Arsenal just because us fans want to, we haven`t finished above them because we haven`t done as well as them, it`s fucking simple.
I`m quite glad you mentioned the spend, over the last 5 years we have spent the 5th most, not 6th most, so we are doing better than you have asked for. But i assume making money on player sales is wrong, we should flog them off cheap so we can share a negative net spend with every other club, yes?

      • Lilywhite without the II February 25, 2017 at 5:20 pm

I assume most of the profitable player sales has come from players we didn’t want to sell…..so yes, its wrong.

        • Freund or Foe February 25, 2017 at 5:22 pm

          Really? That`s your argument?

          • Lilywhite without the II February 25, 2017 at 5:23 pm

i’ve forgotten what the argument was, i’m watching Kremlins 2, remind me again?

            • Freund or Foe February 25, 2017 at 5:26 pm

You said we should spend the 6th most in the league. I told you we`ve spent the 5th most. I told you that it`s ok to make profit on players. You told me it`s not, and assumed most profit was made on players we don`t want. Astounded, I asked if that was your argument. And now we`re here.

              • Freund or Foe February 25, 2017 at 5:28 pm

                *to sell.

              • Lilywhite without the II February 25, 2017 at 5:31 pm

Its more “net” spend i mean, not just recycling the money.
I’m a “lets win a trophy” kinda guy as supposed to finishing top 4 for the sake of financial gain, when, the club don’t invest in top four players when we do get there, either of the 2 times…so whats the point..

                • ethan February 25, 2017 at 5:49 pm

Our spend is high only because of the Bale money. If it wasn’t for that it would be very low too. Net spend is a better indication of how much has been invested to improve the squad on a net basis. Not after selling Gareth Bale.

                  • Freund or Foe February 25, 2017 at 6:15 pm

“Net spend is a better indication of how much has been invested to improve the squad on a net basis”.
No shit Sherlock, did you work that out all by yourself?

                  • Freund or Foe February 25, 2017 at 6:27 pm

You`re right though, take away the Bale money we spent and we drop from 5th down to a lowly 6th in the gross spending league. #criminal

Imagine when we sell Deli, our net spend will go from 1 mil to -149 mil…

    • A waddle and a fork February 25, 2017 at 5:33 pm

Exactly this! Man U are on to potentially win more than us this season and they are having a torrid time. We are only good cos of Potch, that’s despite the investment not because of it. If he quits then what?

Yeah, that’s the one i read. Theres no break down of money spent. Just 20 mill debt. All the incomes accounted for but no outgoings. Just details of new build and training complex. They can drag that out as a reason for not investing in the squad indefinitely I suppose.

  • JuandeInternational February 25, 2017 at 3:35 pm

I think most of us would welcome this, but lets be honest, Levy is a control freak who either personally, or via colleagues, seeks to micro manage every single aspect of what happens at the club. Even if he did appoint an executive of football related matters, that person would be kept within a very short leash to ensure that Levy’s plans were adhered to. Even the new stadium will not make much of a difference. As has been pointed out on many blogs here, ENIC have seen how much wealth is generated and retained at Arsenal and the new stadium will simply allow us to follow suit. Until they sell and move on, nothing is going to change.

    • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? February 25, 2017 at 3:40 pm

Yep.arsenal. that club has been laughing in its fans face for years they don’t give a solitary fuck about the supporters. You just got to look at their board to see what that club is. That’s the model we are following. Shudder:-[

  • spurs108 February 25, 2017 at 3:17 pm

” … On 21 August 2009 the club reported that they had issued a further 30 million shares to fund the initial development costs of the new stadium project, and that 27.8 million of these new shares had been purchased by ENIC.[34]

The Annual Report for 2010 indicated that ENIC had acquired 76% of all Ordinary Shares and also held 97% of all convertible redeemable preference shares, equivalent to a holding of 85% of share capital.[35] Following an announcement at the 2011 AGM, in January 2012 the club confirmed that they had been transferred into the private ownership of ENIC…”

Most of you guys were purring, ooohing and cooing in the early stages of Thursday’s match, and indeed other times when we play well. We just need, on the field, an agile mind, a proper leader, a true captain, and there will be miracles. We just have to find a proper fitting EL Kapitano. Someone to pull the strings, stir the flagging minds, drive the players on that extra little bit towards thd finish line. Patience and resolve, min by min, mstch by match, week by week.

In the case of sunderland and others, ownership is doing their job properly by supporting their managers. Others are letting them down.

Our strength ls our organisation (tactical superiority) and not the quality of our players and some ungrateful supporters try to blame one person who is solely responsible for our success.

            • Horndog 😎 February 25, 2017 at 2:40 pm

Not ungrateful at all, never have been. It is the use of Sunderland as a positive example that is baffling. That is all.

            • Ronwol196061🇨🇦 February 25, 2017 at 2:42 pm

We don’t have tactical superiority. When the system work it’s great when it doesn’t it’s shit.
              Its a one trick pony.
We don’t know if our players will be better under a different system.
But one thing is for sure. That this is on Poch’s ticket.
He is not managing another’s system. Only his own and if he didn’t think it could work for the players we have then he IS the problem. He should then stand for what he needs.
I think he is in complete agreement with Levy and the plan is a longer term one than yours 108.

    • BigChiv February 25, 2017 at 2:21 pm

Do you not realise that your logic is defeated by publishing that table?

There is no correlation between net spend and league position.

How many times have West Ham finished 6th in the last 5 years?

Why do Sunderland fight relegation year after year?

How come Chelsea have won tiles in the last 5 years but Woolwich with an higher net spend, have not?

For the love of god, WAKE UP, it is not how much you pay for a player, it is how well that player performs for you and the impact he has upon results that counts!

      Example 1:

      Otamendi 32M v Toby 11.5M

Had we paid 20.5M more for Toby (ie. 32M), would we have a better player? No, we’d have the SAME player but with a higher net spend.

      Example 2:

Toby 11.5M – plays consistently well, and has a positive impact upon results by helping to stop opponents from scoring against us.

Sissoko 30M – have I made my point?

      • Freund or Foe February 25, 2017 at 2:23 pm

Just fucking spend, that`ll make everything peachy.

      • Camel February 25, 2017 at 2:26 pm

The point is that we have not won anything because we won’t buy the players we need.

        • BigChiv February 25, 2017 at 2:28 pm

That is a different argument to us not winning anything due to net spend.

          • Real Fan? February 25, 2017 at 2:31 pm

Yes. And No. We still need to spend big on the right player who will make a difference. We haven’t been able to do that ‘because Stadium’.

            • BigChiv February 25, 2017 at 2:54 pm

Sorry Real Fan but is 11.5M spending big (on Toby)?

I don’t think so, but is he the right player, 100%.

      • spurs108 February 25, 2017 at 2:35 pm

We have a good system but if we had tactical superiority we would be doing better than we are. At Sunderland and Ghent for a start and we really showed Liverpool our tactical superiority didn’t we.??????

      • Poxy February 25, 2017 at 4:20 pm

Agreed, but all other things equal ant clubs that spend the most should be the most successful. Money doesn’t guarantee success but lack of it does preclude it. The game’s top clubs tend to spend a lot of money.

We could raise roughly £156m from player sales this summer.

    Carroll £4.5m / Fazio £2.5m / Bentaleb £16m / Njie £7m / Janssen £15m / Nkoudou £10m / Sissoko £24m / Wimmer £15m / Davies £20m / Vorm £6m / Onomah £6m / Lamela £30m.

I’m sure some will disagree with the figures I’ve assigned – and whether or not we should cash in on Lamela. However, if we did, it could be usefully reinvested in something like

    Lopez £6m
    Mbappe £68m
    Tielemens £30m
    Klaassen £15m
    Maguire £15m
    Sessegnon £8m
    Sebastien Haller £15m
    = £157m

approximate & based on reported values.

We’ll probably end up with Demarai Gray and Zaha.

Having spent 70 odd mil this summer, we truly should be challenging more than we are. You can blame Levy, but these additions are still the players Poch chose & agreed on, that’s where the buck stops.

  • OfftheShelf February 25, 2017 at 12:46 pm

Levy has openly admitted that he does not know much about football, is this not the main reason for the recruitment (still continuing I believe) of a Director of Football in order to have an adviser on the game who does not have the pressure that a manager has, unfortunately those who have had the job did not seem to fit the bill.

Spurs 108:’ our attacking players are average’ total twaddle, Eriksen, Dembele and Alli have all been praised by top international players, past and present, in the case of Harry Kane Zidane professes to be a top admirer even posting on his site about the quality of Kane’s goals.
But if you are comparing them to Messi/Ronaldo then they are second class.

    • spurs108 February 25, 2017 at 12:57 pm

Eriksen? who is afraid from his own shadow to make a tackle. Who cannot clear the first defender from the corner kicks. Who is criticised by his own national manager for lack of consistency.

Dembele attacking player? no he is not get your facts right.

So when I watch the forward runs by Dembele it must be a mirage. There are two men in that position the other being Wanyama has the holding player, Dembele is the deep attacking midfielder the man who links with the likes of Eriksen.

        Open your eyes.

  • Freund or Foe February 25, 2017 at 12:37 pm

Our latest financial results showed a post tax profit of 9mil. That doesn`t even pay for Nocluedoo. If you add Dan`s wages to that, then we just about get to the NoCluedoo transfer fee. If you add the dividends taken by Unlce Joe (the famed Duffel bag), then we remain at the Nocluedoo transfer figure.
These are results for year ending 30th June 2015, we should see the latest results at the end of March, so it will be interesting to see how turnover and profit has changed, given improved TV deals.
But given the fact that the type of players we need will be 20-30mil plus (let alone the wages they would demand), you can see that there is a difference between financial security and serious team investment.

Would 2 or 3 extra quality players have ‘bought’ us the title last year, therefore increasing revenue enough to cover the outlay? Quite possibly it would have been well worth the punt. Were those players available and what Poch wanted? Would they have come to us? Would they accept a wage that didn`t blow our current structure out of the water? Your guess is as good as mine, but whatever conclusion you came to, it would be a guess.

The big difference is Liverpool presses their opposition but Chelsea and City don’t.
We cannot handle press (ie liverpool) because of our lack of technical skill/ability and that’s why we will always struggle against liverpool under their current manager.

  • Ronwol1960-61 February 25, 2017 at 12:14 pm

Abramovich has fuck it money. Fuck it money has destroyed countries. Levy and Joe are solid. Conservative. Real.
They may or may not build a football empire, not sure they have to goods and those kind of smarts to create that but they are keeping things going and maybe good will happen.
Its frustrating. On the football side we crumble at times. But to compete with the other clubs at the top we would have to take great gambles.
Of course most of the bloggers here have one thing going for them here. Hindsight. Everyone knows what we should do after whatever has happened and whatever hasn’t happened. Its a crap shoot though.
Levy is doing things using his own threshold, what he can handle. He is no genius. But who is?
If there is unlimited funds you can keep buying till you hit it.Thats what the top teams do. {its safe to say that now Leicester is out of contention)
The Monopoly players here should stick to Monopoly. Losing is easier to take when you can put away the plastic hotels and houses and fold up the business before you watch the latest episode of Coronation street.

For me we could be playing better football on the field. We could create more. We could fight a little harder in footballing ways. I’m not so sure about Poch. He built a nice quality defence and has some good attackers but cant seem to negotiate through when the roads are blocked.
Too many excuses for me all around with Levy being the foil for it all.
I’m not impressed with us when the press doesn’t work. There are players we have that have shown they can do some good things and yet they often don’t. Is it the system that limits these players instincts?

Our main problem is not players, that is a problem in some respects, but not the main one. The main problem is lesdership on the field. How diifficult is it for a manager to identify a decent leader, train him, develop him and integrate him into the team. Then build a proper team around him. With due respect to Llorry n Kane n Verts. They are not Keanes, nor Terrys nor Adamss. With the current first team and a good leader we can become unbeatable.

Leadership on the field is a part but how big it is,Im not sure.
We were not ready for the Liverpool game. Is that leadership on the field?

Our attacking players are average at best – they are worst among top 6 and arguably worse than even Everton’s

They are not consistent because they lack real class – Some cannot even control the fuck1ng ball.

How many of our attacking players will feature in any of the other top 6 teams? None

With any other manager we would finish seventh or even lower.

With Negative net transfer continuing, there will be more teams challenging our top 7 position.

You are talking nonsense I am afraid.

      • Ronwol1960-61 February 25, 2017 at 12:38 pm

        We have Lloris,Kane,Dele Alli,Eriksen,Alderwiereld,Jan,Dier,Rose,Walker etc
These are players that are good enough for the top 6. There is no guarantee to get to top 6 even buying some more players. First of all the wage bill will skyrocket and Levy is not going to throw 150 mil into the project at least not now.
Poch is not getting the best out of the players that’s bullshit

Its fucking nonsense all right but its true

      • spurs108 February 25, 2017 at 12:53 pm

I don’t want to be nasty towards our English youngsters Kane and Alli because they are work in progress but they are not producing goods consistently.

We played better with 10 players and without Alli on the pitch.

Their inflated valuation is mostly based on the ‘hype’ and potential.

Kane scored against Fulham but when was the last time he done well against big teams. Ha has no pace and takes 2-3 touches to control the ball and I doubt he improved during the last year.

Team need a quality striker who will perform consistently.

        • Ronwol1960-61 February 25, 2017 at 12:56 pm

This is all hindsight bullshit my friend
Kane is a top class striker. He and Janssen need to get better service. We are lacking in the creative department. Dele Alli is a great player. He is a punk that doesn’t want to knuckle down but needs to focus on football rather than bullshit
